Phase 1/2 clinical trial data of Oncophage for recurrent high-grade glioma

Antigenics today announced that data from a multi-center Phase 1/2 clinical trial of Oncophage (vitespen) for recurrent high-grade glioma (brain cancer) was presented at the International Conference on Brain Tumor Research and Therapy. The study was conducted by the Brain Tumor Research Center at the University of California, San Francisco.

A popular belief that specific dietary changes can improve the symptoms of children with autism was not supported by a tightly controlled University of Rochester study, which found that eliminating gluten and casein from the diets of children with autism had no impact on their behavior, sleep or bowel patterns.

NeuroTherapeutics Pharma closes $43 million Series B financing round

NeuroTherapeutics Pharma, Inc. (NTP), a biopharmaceutical company focused on developing novel therapies for central nervous system (CNS) disorders, announced today that it closed a $43 million Series B financing. New investors include Fidelity Biosciences, MPM Capital and SR One, who co-led the transaction, and Pfizer, Inc. Existing investors Novo Ventures and Thomas McNerney & Partners also participated in the round.

Patterson's consolidated sales for fourth-quarter fiscal 2010 up 4%

Patterson Companies, Inc. today reported consolidated sales of $812,762,000 for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2010 ended April 24, an increase of 4% from $779,884,000 in the year-earlier quarter. Internal growth accounted for 1% of the fourth quarter sales increase, with acquisitions and foreign currency adjustments accounting for the balance.

Spanish researchers reprogram adult stem cells to help cardiac muscle regeneration

Spanish researchers have employed for the first time adult cells extracted from a human heart to turn stem cells from adipose tissue into cardiac myocytes. In other words, they achieved to "reprogram" adult stem cells, which might improve treatments for heart disease therapeutical.

Androgen receptors promote hepatitis B virus in growth and development of hepatoma cells

Dr. Ming-Heng Wu of the Institute of Basic Medical Sciences at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Taiwan, in collaboration with Prof. Chawnshang Chang's laboratory of University of Rochester (UR), United States, have discovered that androgen receptors (AR) can promote hepatitis B virus-induced hepatocarcinogenesis through modulation of hepatitis B virus (HBV) RNA transcription.

Ectoin shows positive effect on nanoparticle-induced lung inflammation: Study

bitop AG, which specializes in the development and marketing of Ectoin-containing medical devices, announces that Ectoin significantly reduces nanoparticle-induced inflammatory reaction in rat lungs, one of the animal models for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It is the first time that Ectoin has been shown to have such an effect on nanoparticle-induced lung inflammation.

Treatment costs higher for CVD patients readmitted after leaving hospitals against medical advice

A University of Maryland School of Pharmacy study shows that among patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD) who discharged themselves from the hospital early the treatment cost if they are readmitted runs 9 percent higher compared to CVD patients who had been formally discharged.

70% of oncologists and 60% of ob-gyns disagree with Task Force's mammogram recommendations

Recent recommendations by the US Preventive Task Force on Breast Cancer advising that women under the age of 50 should not get routine mammograms have resulted in fierce debate within the medical community. According to a new oncology study from ORC, an Infogroup Company, 70 percent of oncologists and 60 percent of ob-gyns disagree with the assertion that women should not get mammograms before the age of 50.

Recruitment of children and adults with type 1 diabetes commences in Protege Encore teplizumab trial

Dr. Barry Reiner announced that he is now recruiting children and adults with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes for Protege Encore, a randomized, placebo-controlled Phase III clinical trial. This is the second of two Phase III studies testing the safety and efficacy of an investigational drug called teplizumab. The first study, known as Protege, has completed enrollment of more than 530 subjects with type 1 diabetes. There is currently no approved therapy to slow the progression of type 1 diabetes.
