Combination therapy proves to be effective treatment for lethal form of leukemia: Research

New research discovers a combination of drugs that may prove to be a more effective treatment for a lethal form of leukemia. The study, published by Cell Press in the May issue of the journal Cancer Cell, reports that the new therapeutic strategy effectively targets notoriously intractable leukemia stem cells that often escape standard treatment and are a main factor in disease relapse.

BioSante receives two new US patents covering 2A/Furin technology for expressing proteins

BioSante Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced the receipt of two US new patents directed to its 2A/Furin technology for expressing proteins. The first issued US patent, US Pat. No., 7,709,224, covers methods for manufacturing recombinant antibodies. By incorporating our 2A/Furin technology into antibody-expression in viral vectors it is possible to rapidly generate stable, high producing antibody cell lines.

KaloBios Pharmaceuticals' KB001 promising in prevention of serious lung infection

The data from the initial clinical studies with KB001, a novel antibody fragment against PcrV on Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Pa) bioengineered by KaloBios Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and partnered with sanofi pasteur, demonstrated promising therapeutic activity in the prevention of serious lung infection in mechanically ventilated patients colonized with the bacterium and in limiting potentially damaging inflammation in patients with cystic fibrosis, where Pa plays an important role in the disease.

Combining medicine switch with cognitive behavioral therapy can reduce symptoms of depression: Study

More than one-third of teenagers with treatment-resistant depression - many of whom had been depressed for more than two years - became symptom-free six months after switching their medication or combining a medicine switch with cognitive behavioral therapy during a multicenter study led by UT Southwestern Medical Center researchers.

FDA accepts for filing Sigma-Tau Pharmaceuticals' cysteamine hydrochloride ophthalmic solution NDA

Sigma-Tau Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has accepted the filing of the company's new drug application (NDA) for its cysteamine hydrochloride ophthalmic solution, an investigational therapy for the treatment of corneal cystine crystals in patients with cystinosis. The FDA also granted the NDA Priority Review status, a designation given to drugs that may provide major advances or a treatment where no adequate therapy exists.

High-fat ketogenic diet effective in treating infantile spasms

The high-fat ketogenic diet can dramatically reduce or completely eliminate debilitating seizures in most children with infantile spasms, whose seizures persist despite medication, according to a Johns Hopkins Children's Center study published online April 30 in the journal Epilepsia.

152 research and training grants awarded to researchers at 93 institutions nationwide

The American Cancer Society, the largest non-government, not-for-profit funding source of cancer research in the United States, has awarded 152 new national research and training grants totaling $50,717,000 in the first of two grants cycles for 2010. The grants, primarily to early career researchers, cover a broad range of investigator-initiated ideas at 93 institutions nationwide, from whether cadmium exposure increases the risk of endometrial cancer, to studies of plant and bacterial-bourne compounds, to a study on a protein called survivin that could lead to novel drugs targeting prostate cancer.

Hawthorn announces licensing deal with University of Pittsburgh for novel monoclonal antibodies for cancer

Hawthorn Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced a global licensing deal with the University of Pittsburgh covering a series of novel monoclonal antibodies for cancer. Health Robotics and B. Braun Melsungen AG today announced that in exchange for undisclosed consideration, Health Robotics has re-acquired from B. Braun the exclusive marketing, sales, installation, implementation, interface, manufacturing, and technical support European rights for CytoCare, a robot designed to manufacture chemotherapy and hazardous IV Admixtures, and which rights B. Braun had previously acquired from Health Robotics in 2007 and 2008.
