Though the initiative "sends a clear message to the world about U.S. intent to partner with poor nations to achieve their national food and nutrition goals … the Initiative's nutrition plan, unlike its detailed agricultural blueprint, currently lacks a comprehensive set of aims, activities, research needs, and programme benchmarks," the authors write.

EU-SILC data show older people face higher poverty risks than total EU population

Results using the latest EU-SILC data for 2008 show that, on average, older people face a higher poverty risk rate than the total population: the rate for older people was 19% as opposed to rate for the total population of 17%.

Haitian President asks for better aid coordination, tents, jobs

Haitian President Rene Preval said the country is in need of sturdy tents and jobs to prevent an ongoing crisis, the Miami Herald reports. At a press conference, Preval said, "Help the people with tents. Create employment so people can buy food in the country. That is what's most important."

PIH receives medical volunteers, medical supplies to support its relief work in Haiti

Partners HealthCare in Boston and Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) in Lebanon, NH, have sent multiple teams of medical volunteers as well as critical medical supplies and equipment to support Partners In Health's earthquake relief efforts in Haiti.
