Human amniotic fluid skin cells "reprogrammed" to pluripotency

In a breakthrough that may help fill a critical need in stem cell research and patient care, researchers at Mount Sinai School of Medicine have demonstrated that skin cells found in human amniotic fluid can be efficiently "reprogrammed" to pluripotency, where they have characteristics similar to human embryonic stem cells that can develop into almost any type of cell in the human body. The study is online now and will appear in print in the next issue of the journal Cellular Reprogramming, to be published next month.

External beam radiotherapy device without shielded bunker infrastructure for breast cancer irradiation

Orbital Therapy has completed the build of their proof-of-concept prototype for breast cancer irradiation, and demonstrated the feasibility to develop and operate an external beam radiotherapy device without the use of a heavily shielded bunker infrastructure.

Tolerx publishes follow-up data from study of otelixizumab therapy for new onset T1DM patients

Tolerx, Inc., today announced the publication in Diabetologia, the journal of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes, of the four-year follow-up clinical data from new onset type 1 diabetes (T1DM) patients (age 12-39) who received a single short course of therapy with otelixizumab (ChAglyCD3).

Patient enrollment in Spinal Restoration' Phase III study of Biostat System now underway

Spinal Restoration, Inc. announced today that patient enrollment in the company’s Phase III study of the Biostat System for the treatment of discogenic chronic low back pain is now underway. The study, which will be conducted at 15 U.S. clinical sites, is one of only a few multi-center, randomized, blinded, placebo-controlled trials of a nonsurgical treatment for discogenic low back pain ever to be conducted.

Viron Therapeutics' VT-346 anti-TNF protein exhibits positive results in transgenic mouse model for arthritis

Viron Therapeutics Inc. announced that VT-346, an anti-TNF protein therapeutic, demonstrated positive results in a pivotal proof of concept study in the gold standard transgenic mouse model for arthritis. VT-346 achieved a statistically significant, dose dependent impact in this preclinical model of arthritis and prevented deterioration due to disease in terms of weight gain, arthritic score and pathology parameters. VT-346 had particularly strong protective effects on therapeutically-important bone and cartilage damage in this model.

Cytheris study: rhIL-7 treatment restores T cell trafficking and improves survival in animal model of sepsis

KRG Capital Partners sells ATI Holdings to GTCR Golder Rauner

KRG Capital Partners, a Denver-based buyout firm, completed its sale of ATI Holdings (“ATI”) to GTCR Golder Rauner LLC (“GTCR”). The transaction closed on March 12, 2010. The all cash sale represents KRG’s first full exit in its $715 million Fund III. ATI is a provider of outpatient physical therapy services with an offering that includes physical rehabilitation, hand therapy, aquatic therapy, work conditioning/work hardening, sports medicine and functional capacity assessments.

Promedior raises $12M in Series C financing

Promedior, Inc., a clinical stage biotechnology company developing novel therapies to treat inflammatory and fibrotic diseases, today announced that it has raised $12 million in a Series C financing round. Forbion Capital Partners led the round, with participation from existing investors Morgenthaler Ventures, HealthCare Ventures, Polaris Venture Partners, and Easton Capital. The Series C financing brings the total capital raised by Promedior over the past year to $27 million.

Enrollment in patient study to evaluate Magellan DART System for Annular Repair completed

Magellan Spine Technologies, Inc. today announced it had completed enrollment in a twenty patient study to evaluate the Magellan DART (Disc Annular Repair Technology) System for Annular Repair following lumbar discectomy procedures. This first study demonstrates evidence that the DART technology is safe and patients implanted with the DART have excellent outcomes approaching one year follow-up.

Angioplasty: Complexity of heart disease, gender and body size influence cumulative radiation skin dose

Body size, gender and the complexity of heart disease significantly influence how much cumulative radiation skin dose that patients receive during percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) therapy, also known as angioplasty, according to a new Mayo Clinic study. The study was undertaken as a quality control initiative to reduce the potential radiation risks of cancer to patients and PCI operators.

Stage IV colorectal cancer: Therapy that improves overall survival over IFL/bevacizumab will earn 60% patient share

Decision Resources, one of the world's leading research and advisory firms for pharmaceutical and healthcare issues, finds that a therapy that would improve median overall survival over IFL (bolus 5-fluorouracil, generics/leucovorin, generics/irinotecan*) plus bevacizumab (Roche/Genentech/Chugai's Avastin), would earn a 60 percent patient share in stage IV colorectal cancer, according to surveyed U.S. oncologists. In Europe, such an agent would earn a 50 percent patient share, according to surveyed European oncologists.

RE-LY study: Dabigatran etexilate shows greater reductions in stroke compared to warfarin

Data presented today at the 59th Annual Scientific Session of the American College of Cardiology have shown greater reductions in stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) for dabigatran etexilate compared to the current standard of care, warfarin, irrespective of a patient’s risk profile for stroke.
