Health experts explore risk reduction and management strategies for lymphedema

There are no scientific studies showing that lymphedema can be prevented, but there are ways to lower your risk of developing this treatment side effect. During the 10th Annual Conference for Young Women Affected by Breast Cancer, we will explore the myths and recent scientific evidence about lymphedema, learn about risk reduction techniques and discuss approaches to lymphedema management, including exercise, physical therapy, lymphatic drainage, massage and other treatment methods.

FDA's proposed label changes for LABA asthma medications: GSK reviews

GlaxoSmithKline is reviewing label changes proposed today by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for asthma medications containing long-acting beta-agonists (LABAs), such as GSK's Advair (salmeterol / fluticasone propionate). GSK and makers of the other affected medicines containing LABAs have 30 days to agree with the proposed changes or state why they are not warranted.

FDA approves Rituxan-FC combination therapy for CLL

Genentech, Inc., a wholly owned member of the Roche Group, and Biogen Idec announced today the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Rituxan® (rituximab) in combination with fludarabine and cyclophosphamide (FC) for people with previously untreated and previously treated CD20-positive chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL).

Patterson reports consolidated sales of $820,084,000 for third-quarter of fiscal 2010

Patterson Companies, Inc. today reported consolidated sales of $820,084,000 for the third quarter of fiscal 2010 ended January 23, an increase of 1% from $811,023,000 in the year-earlier quarter. Net income of $56,049,000 or $.47 per diluted share rose 6% from $52,807,000 or $0.45 per diluted share in the third quarter of fiscal 2009.

Combination therapy that delays nursing home admission for AD earns 43% patient share in U.S. and 30% in Europe

Decision Resources, one of the world's leading research and advisory firms for pharmaceutical and healthcare issues, finds that, for the treatment of moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease, a combination therapy that delays nursing home admission at 19 months would earn 43 percent patient share, according to surveyed U.S. neurologists. In comparison, in Europe, such an agent would earn a slightly lower patient share of 30 percent, according to surveyed European neurologists. This lower share estimate is possibly a result of higher price sensitivity of European markets.

Detroit-area resident Muhammad Shahab pleaded guilty today for his role in organizing a Detroit-area home health care fraud scheme, announced Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer of the Criminal Division; U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan Barbara L. McQuade; Special Agent in Charge Andrew G. Arena of the FBI's Detroit Field Office; and Special Agent in Charge Lamont Pugh III of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Inspector General's (HHS-OIG), Chicago Regional Office.

Gilead Sciences’ “Quad” regimen for HIV exhibits antiretroviral activity comparable to Atripla

Gilead Sciences, Inc. announced Phase II clinical trial results today showing that its investigational fixed-dose single-tablet “Quad” regimen of elvitegravir, GS 9350 (cobicistat) and Truvada® (emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate) for the treatment of HIV infection exhibited antiretroviral activity comparable to that of Atripla® (efavirenz 600 mg/ emtricitabine 200 mg/ tenofovir disoproxil fumarate 300 mg).

Latino parents with asthmatic child more likely to quit smoking: Study

Asthma is the most common chronic illness affecting Latino children in the United States, and secondhand smoke is a serious contributing factor. Medication therapy management programs for Aetna Medicare members

Report estimates Haiti earthquake damages could reach nearly $14B
