Thoratec reports revenues of $373.9M for fiscal 2009

Study sheds light on pancreatic cancer development and new potential drug targets

Researchers at the Moores Cancer Center at the University of California, San Diego, have found one reason that pancreatic cancer tumors are so difficult to treat with drugs. They have shown how a molecular switch steps up pancreatic cancer cell survival as well as resistance to a standard chemotherapy drug, and have identified alternate routes cancer cells take to avoid the effects of the therapy.

UT-Battelle exclusively licenses patents on inventions based on Nell-1 gene

In a major step toward commercialization of a promising therapeutic treatment, Oak Ridge National Laboratory contractor UT-Battelle announced at a signing ceremony here today that it has exclusively licensed patents on inventions based on the Nell-1 gene to NellOne Therapeutics, Inc. (NellOne), a company spun out of research performed at the Department of Energy laboratory.

Medtronic, Inc. announced today pivotal data for the Medtronic Arctic Front® CryoAblation Catheter System will be presented as a late breaking clinical trial at the 59th Annual Scientific Session of the American College of Cardiology on Monday, March 15 at 8 a.m. ET. The STOP-AF (Sustained Treatment of Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation) clinical trial is evaluating the safety and efficacy of the Arctic Front CryoAblation Catheter System for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) patients.

Conatus Pharmaceuticals Inc. announced today the initiation of a Phase II clinical trial evaluating CTS-1027 in combination with pegylated interferon (Pegasys®) and ribavirin (Copegus®) in refractory HCV patients. Antiviral activity, safety and tolerability of the triple combination will be assessed after up to 48 weeks of therapy.

Zelos Therapeutics commences dosing in clinical study of ZT-034 nasal spray for osteoporosis

Zelos Therapeutics, Inc. has initiated dosing in a seven day clinical study of a nasal spray formulation of ZT-034 (teriparatide) that is being developed in collaboration with development partner Aegis Therapeutics, LLC. Nasal spray ZT-034 is being developed as an alternative to Eli Lilly and Company’s Forteo (teriparatide [rDNA origin]) which generated approximately $800M in annual sales in 2009 for the treatment of osteoporosis and is administered by daily injection.

NIDA supports Omeros' Addiction program

Celgene reports total revenue of $758M for fourth-quarter of 2009

Celgene Corporation announced non-GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) net income of $290.3 million, or non-GAAP diluted earnings per share of $0.62 for the quarter ended December 31, 2009. Non-GAAP net income for the fourth quarter of 2008 was $200.9 million or non-GAAP diluted earnings per share of $0.43. Based on U.S. GAAP, Celgene reported net income of $254.2 million, or diluted earnings per share of $0.54 for the quarter ended December 31, 2009. GAAP net loss for the fourth quarter of 2008 was $149.3 million, or diluted loss per share of $0.33.

AAOS, SOMOS, and OTA host EWI symposium on improving patient care for wounded warriors

Since the beginning of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom, there have been nearly 36,000 battle- injured warriors, of which approximately 82 percent suffer extremity trauma. Many of these injuries are complicated by the effects of improvised explosive devices which cause injury patterns distinct from civilian trauma. Traditional wound-management guidelines simply fall short.
