Miracle boy born after new infertility therapy

A Lancashire couple Andrew and Louise Riley have been blessed with a “miracle baby boy” thanks to a pioneering new genetic screening process. Elliott Riley was born just after Christmas after the Rileys opted for a relatively new technique called array comparative genomic hybridisation (CGH) after 10 years of infertility treatments. Mrs. Riley, 37, and her husband, 39, said they were delighted to welcome Elliott on December 30.

Breast and lung cancer: Shared risk and treatment

New research has shown that women who are heavy smokers before menopause, especially prior to giving birth, may significantly increase their risk of developing breast cancer. In the US study looking at almost 150,000 women from the Nurses’ Health Study; it was found that breast cancer rates increased with higher levels of smoking among younger age groups. The study appeared in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine.

New research has shown that capsules containing a mixture of fatty acids can help relieve symptoms of PMT or Pre-Menstrual Tension - also known as Pre-Menstrual Syndrome (PMS). Home births on the decline in UK: Midwives protest

According to a leader of Britain’s midwives, more and more women are being discouraged from giving birth at home. Program reduces cervical cancer deaths among HIV-infected women in Zambia

A new study undertaken in Zambia shows that, using setting-appropriate human resources and technology, morbidity and mortality from cervical cancer among HIV-infected women can be reduced. The study’s lead author is Dr Groesbeck Parham, Professor of Gynecologic Oncology and Infectious Diseases, University of Alabama at Birmingham, and Director of the Centre for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia’s Cervical Cancer Prevention Program. The research was published in the December issue of HIV Therapy.

Health professionals discuss on reducing maternal, newborn mortality, morbidity

On Tuesday 7 December 2010, maternal health professionals from Africa and Asia will be attending a workshop in Liverpool to discuss the effects of 'Making It Happen', a programme with a life-saving training package for health care providers at its heart. National Pap Test Campaign for cervical cancer diagnosis

The Federation of Medical Women of Canada (FMWC) and the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC) are ready to launch this year's National Pap Test Campaign, to take place during National Cervical Cancer Awareness Week. From October 24th to 30th, over 100 health-care professionals across Canada are taking a stand against cervical cancer by hosting public Pap test clinics in their community.
