Eisai to seek marketing authorization for perampanel in the U.S. and EU

Eisai announced today that it will submit Marketing Authorization Applications in the United States and the European Union for the investigational compound perampanel (E2007) based on the results of three Phase III pivotal studies. Perampanel is a first-in-class, highly selective non-competitive AMPA-type glutamate receptor antagonist, discovered and being developed by Eisai for adjunctive treatment of partial onset seizures in patients with epilepsy.

The calculator is a solution which helps Press Ganey hospital clients understand how much they stand to lose each year, as well as how to target the areas for improvement that are most likely to optimize VBP reimbursement.

Eisai's eritoran ACCESS study in severe sepsis does not meet primary endpoint

Based on the preliminary findings from the ACCESS (A Controlled Comparison of Eritoran and Placebo in Patients with Severe Sepsis) trial, Eisai Inc. announced today that the company will not submit marketing authorization applications to regulatory authorities in the United States, the European Union and Japan by the end of the fiscal year (March 31, 2011), as previously planned.

Canada's new lowered exercise guidelines are only minimums for a sedentary population

The Canadian Physiotherapy Association (CPA) says the new lowered exercise guidelines released today by the Public Health Agency of Canada represent minimums for a sedentary population, and will therefore not be applicable to all Canadians. Guidelines for exercise targets for Canadians should be based on health characteristics including health status and current activity levels.

EBRI findings show employers and workers expect increase in health benefit costs

New findings by the Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI) show that both employers and workers say they are not very knowledgeable about health reform, but that employers say they are likely to pass along any health benefit cost increases to workers -- and, mostly, workers are expecting such cost increases.

New study finds disparities in chlamydia screening

A new study from the Indiana University School of Medicine and the Regenstrief Institute has found that Black and especially Hispanic young women are screened for chlamydia at a significantly higher rate than young white women. This discrepancy in screening rates may contribute to nationwide reporting of higher rates of this sexually transmitted disease among minority young women.

Individuals traveling across East Africa on Friday were ordered to begin receiving mandatory yellow fever vaccines in an effort "to contain an outbreak of the disease in Uganda," which has sickened an estimated 190 people, resulting in 48 deaths as of Dec. 30, 2010, the Citizen reports (Ubwani, 1/22).

AMA supports new bi-partisan bill to reform the medical liability system

The American Medical Association (AMA) sent a letter of support for legislation introduced today, H.R. 5, known as the Help Efficient, Accessible, Low-cost, Timely Healthcare (HEALTH) Act of 2011. The bi-partisan bill, introduced by Representatives Phil Gingrey, M.D. (R-GA), David Scott (D-GA), and Lamar Smith (R-TX) includes reforms intended to repair the broken medical liability system, reduce the growth of health care costs, and preserve patients’ access to medical care.
