This week’s issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (Dec 16) features a report on a long-term, prospective study of elderly, dementia-free individuals led by researchers from Boston University School of Medicine and the Framingham Heart Study focusing on the association between the protein hormone Leptin and the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease (AD).

ARNMD meeting examines psychological and neurological aspects of PTSDs and traumatic brain injuries

ODAC to conduct public advisory meeting to review ChemGenex Pharmaceuticals’ NDA for Omapro

Infection control program protects immunocompromised cancer patients from H1N1 infection

Despite a 100-fold increase in H1N1 influenza cases in the Seattle area during spring 2009, an aggressive infection control program to protect immunocompromised cancer patients and thorough screening measures resulted in no corresponding increase in H1N1 cases among the total patient population at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, according to a new study by researchers and physicians at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the SCCA.

Ethicon and Acclarent announce definitive merger agreement

Ethicon, Inc., a Johnson & Johnson company and a worldwide leader in surgical care, and Acclarent, Inc., a privately held medical technology company dedicated to designing, developing and commercializing devices that address conditions affecting the ear, nose and throat (ENT), today announced a definitive merger agreement whereby Ethicon will acquire Acclarent in an all-cash transaction for approximately $785 million net of estimated cash on hand at time of closing.

Major Medicare fraud crackdown in 3 states

The Associated Press: "Federal agents arrested 26 suspects in three states Tuesday, including a doctor and nurses, in a major crackdown on Medicare fraud totaling $61 million in separate scams. Arrests in Miami, Brooklyn and Detroit included a Florida doctor accused of running a $40 million home health care scheme that falsely listed patients as blind diabetics so that he could bill for twice-daily nurse visits.

Ivy Foundation awards nearly $10M for new patient-focused brain cancer research projects

Today, the Ben and Catherine Ivy Foundation (Ivy Foundation), announced that it is funding roughly $10 million for four new patient-focused research projects. As with all Ivy Foundation awards, these projects focus on improving the survival and quality of life for people with brain tumors but also specifically address new strategies to improve treatment development.

EMD Serono, Brigham and Women's Hospital collaborate in MS research

EMD Serono, Inc., an affiliate of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, today announced a strategic collaboration with Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, to advance basic and clinical research in multiple sclerosis (MS), with the goal of generating new and innovative discoveries that advance treatment for people living with this condition.
