Prolonged exposure therapy shows greater benefit adolescent girls with sexually abused PTSD

Adolescents girls with sexual abuse-related posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) experienced greater benefit from prolonged exposure therapy (a type of therapy that has been shown effectiveness for adults) than from supportive counseling, according to a study appearing in the December 25 issue of JAMA.

Prolonged exposure therapy shows greater success for treating adolescent PTSD patients

Researchers at Penn Medicine report in the December 25 issue of JAMA that a modified form of prolonged exposure therapy - in which patients revisit and recount aloud their trauma-related thoughts, feelings and situations - shows greater success than supportive counseling for treating adolescent PTSD patients who have been sexually abused.

Chinese experts publish consensus on spine and spinal cord injury

The early management of acute thoracolumbar spine and spinal cord injury is one of the most difficult tasks when treating trauma cases. To standardize the evaluation and treatment of acute thoracolumbar spinal injury, the Chinese Association of Spine and Spinal Cord Injury organized a group of Chinese experts to collectively discuss the draft of "An Expert Consensus on the Evaluation and Treatment of Acute Thoracolumbar Spine and Spinal Cord Injury".

Research review examines effectiveness of treatments for chronic skin wounds

A systematic review of 66 research papers focused on the treatment of skin ulcers suggests that most are so technically flawed that their results are unreliable. And even of those that pass muster, there is only weak evidence that some treatments work better than standard compression therapy or special stockings.

FDA approves Baxter's FEIBA for prophylactic treatment of hemophilia patients with inhibitors

Baxter International Inc. today announced that the United States Food and Drug Administration granted approval of Baxter's FEIBA [Anti-Inhibitor Coagulant Complex], the first and only FDA-approved treatment for routine prophylaxis to prevent or reduce the frequency of bleeding episodes in patients with hemophilia A or B who have developed inhibitors.

Ipsen reports positive initial results from Dysport phase III study in Adult Upper Limb spasticity

Ipsen today announced positive initial results from the double-blind phase III study of Dysport (abobotulinumtoxinA) in Adult Upper Limb spasticity. Regarding the primary endpoints, treatment with Dysport showed statistically significant response versus placebo in the improvement of muscle tone, as measured by the Modified Ashworth Scale.

Affordable Care Act may help strengthen trauma systems

Traumatic injuries are the leading cause of death and disability for people under the age of 45 and the fourth-leading cause of death for people of all ages. Much progress has been made over the last 50 years in developing statewide regionalized trauma systems to care for these injuries, but authors of a review appearing in the December issue of Health Affairs, believe more work is needed to ensure the right patient gets to the right place at the right time, and that the Affordable Care Act may offer opportunities to strengthen trauma systems.

Taxing sugar-sweetened beverages is likely to decrease consumption, resulting in lower rates of diabetes and heart disease, and these health benefits are expected to be greatest for the low-income, Hispanic and African-American Californians who are at highest risk of diabetes, according to a new analysis led by researchers at UC San Francisco.

St. Joseph's Children's Hospital in Tampa opened its new and expanded Steinbrenner Children's Emergency/Trauma Center Dec. 16, 2013. The hospital has the busiest children's emergency center in the region, and the larger, advanced facility will increase the community's access to the highest level of pediatric emergency care in the area.

The popular half-gloves that leave fingers uncovered for texting may be good for communicating electronically but they may also lead to permanent loss of fingers due to exposure to the cold. "Fingers are one of the first body parts to feel the effects of the cold and damp and along with toes, ears and the nose are frequently subjected to frostbite and even amputation," says Arthur Sanford, MD, Division of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care and Burns, Loyola University Health System.
