Cryo-EM images shed light on virus structure, function

UCLA researchers report in the April 30 edition of the journal Cell that they have imaged a virus structure at a resolution high enough to effectively "see" atoms, the first published instance of imaging biological complexes at such a resolution.

PEAK Surgical announces positive results from two PRECISE Clinical Studies for breast cancer diagnosis

PEAK Surgical, Inc. today announced positive results from two of its ongoing PRECISE Clinical Studies (Pulsed Plasma Radiofrequency to ReduCe Thermal Injury and Improve Surgical HEaling) demonstrating the clinical benefits of using the PEAK PlasmaBlade® tissue dissection device during lumpectomy for the diagnosis of breast cancer. The study findings were presented at the 11th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Breast Surgeons (ASBS) in poster sessions.

IMD seeks FDA regulatory clearance for NADiA ProsVue prostate cancer prognostic test

IRIS International, Inc., a leading manufacturer of automated in-vitro diagnostics systems and consumables for use in hospitals and commercial laboratories worldwide, announced today that its IRIS Molecular Diagnostics (IMD) subsidiary has submitted a 510(k) pre-market notification application to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requesting regulatory clearance for NADiA®ProsVue™, a prostate cancer prognostic test. The test is designed to help physicians identify patients at low risk of cancer recurrence post radical prostatectomy.

Bruker to supply customized N8 TITANOS large sample AFM to US Commerce Department's NIST

Bruker today announced that it has been awarded a $1.1 million contract to supply a customized N8 TITANOS™ large sample Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) to the United States Commerce Department's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The instrument will be used by NIST's Precision Engineering Division (PED) at its Manufacturing Engineering Laboratory, with a main focus on metrology applications which require traceable AFM (T-AFM).

Researchers synthesize metal compounds that can be effective in treatment of cancer

Scientists from Bochum have managed to accurately determine the location of metal complexes within living cancer cells using Raman microscopy. The researchers have thus gained new insights into the mechanism of action of metal-containing drugs, to which they ascribe great potential capacities, e.g. in the treatment of cancer.

Artificial human skin with dermis made from fibrin-agarose biomaterial

Scientists from the University of Granada, Spain, have generated artificial human skin by tissular engineering basing on agarose-fibrin biomaterial. The artificial skin was grafted onto mice, and optimal development, maturation and functionality results were obtained. This pioneering finding will allow the clinical use of human skin and its use in many laboratory tests on biological tissues -which, additionally, would avoid the use of laboratory animals.

NanoImaging Services receives grant to develop methods for characterization of nanoparticle morphology

NanoImaging Services, Inc., announced today that it has received a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant from the National Institutes of Health through the National Center for Research Resources to develop new methods for quantitative characterization of nanoparticle morphology and aggregation state using transmission electron microscopy. The grant provides approximately $200,000 in research and development funds for a Phase I study.

The Atomic Force Microscope depicts on its screen the few nanometer thick and few micrometer long fibers as white flexible sticks, crisscrossing the surface on which they are deposited. The very peculiar property of these proteins lies in fact that they can self assemble into complex ribbon-like twisted fibers.

New methodology helps investigate unfolding of DNA

NYU Langone Medical Center researchers have developed a powerful new method to investigate the discrete steps necessary to turn on individual genes and examine how the process goes wrong in cancer and other diseases. The finding, based on seven years of research and described in the April 9 issue of Molecular Cell, allows scientists to investigate the unfolding of DNA, a process required for gene activation.

Some therapies being investigated for Alzheimer's disease may cause cell death: UCSD

Some current therapies being investigated for Alzheimer's disease may cause further neural degeneration and cell death, according to a breakthrough discovery by UC San Diego researchers. By combining three dimensional computer simulations with high resolution atomic force microscopy membrane protein and cell imaging, electrical recording and various cellular assays, UCSD nano-biophysicist Ratnesh Lal and his colleagues investigated the structure and function of truncated peptides, known as nonamyloidgenic peptides, formed by some Alzheimer's drug candidates.
