Blocking newly discovered second molecular pathway may prevent angiogenesis: UCLA researchers

Researchers at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) have found that a second molecular pathway may need to be blocked to prevent malignant cells from creating new blood vessels [angiogenesis]. A study of patients with pancreatic cancer showed that CXCL5 may be a key molecule in the angiogenesis switch—the point at which cells stop being normal and start producing blood vessels that feed malignancy.

Survey shows etiology of current mastectomy rates is multifactorial

With there being a concern that mastectomy is excessively used as a treatment for breast cancer, a survey of nearly 2,000 women indicates that breast-conserving surgery was attempted as the initial therapy for about 75 percent of those surveyed, according to a study in the October 14 issue of JAMA, a theme issue on surgical care.

NASA signs patent license agreement with OxyHeal Medical Systems for hyperbaric chamber technology

NASA has signed a patent license agreement with a California company to improve the medical community's access to hyperbaric chambers used to treat many medical conditions and emergencies. OxyHeal Medical Systems Inc. of National City, Calif., will develop new products based on technologies NASA originally developed for space.

New research indicates that the use of minimally invasive procedures (including the use of robotic assistance) for radical prostatectomy, which have increased significantly in recent years, may shorten hospital stays and decrease respiratory and surgical complications, but may also result in an increased rate of certain complications, including incontinence and erectile dysfunction, according to a study in the October 14 issue of JAMA, a theme issue on surgical care.

Study shows elevated levels of antioxidant urate can slow the progression of Parkinson's disease

By examining data from a 20-year-old clinical trial, a research team based at the MassGeneral Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases (MGH-MIND) and Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH), has found evidence supporting the findings of their 2008 study - that elevated levels of the antioxidant urate may slow the progression of Parkinson's disease.

Bilateral epidural prefrontal cortical stimulation (EpCS) was found generally safe and provided significant improvement of depressive symptoms in a small group of patients, according to lead researcher Ziad Nahas, M.D. at the Medical University of South Carolina. The data are reported in the on-line issue of Biological Psychiatry.
