Implantable defibrillator therapy not beneficial for women with heart failure

Implantable cardioverter-defibrillators do not appear to be associated with a reduced risk of death in women with advanced heart failure, according to a meta-analysis of previously published research in the September 14 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.

Extension study data on Fampridine-SR drug

Data from two long-term open-label extension studies of Fampridine-SR show that 86.0% of participants remained on therapy after a maximum treatment time of 15 months in study MS-F204EXT, and 69.5% remained on therapy after a maximum treatment time of 36 months in study MS-F203EXT.

GlaxoSmithKline's Votrient will take significant market share away from Pfizer's Sutent by 2018

Decision Resources, one of the world's leading research and advisory firms for pharmaceutical and healthcare issues finds that, following its launch and uptake, GlaxoSmithKline's angiogenesis inhibitor Votrient (formerly Armala) will garner sales of $640 million by 2018 and will take significant market share away from Pfizer's Sutent. In 2008, Sutent had accounted for 61 percent of sales in the angiogenesis inhibitor drug class.

IMPROVE HF clinical trial results presented at annual HFSA meeting

Twenty-four month findings from IMPROVE HF, (The Registry to Improve the Use of Evidence-Based Heart Failure Therapies in the Outpatient Setting), funded by Medtronic, Inc., demonstrated that clinics using the process improvement program increased adherence to evidence-based, guideline-recommended care by 82 and 62 percent, respectively, for cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) and implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) use, and 80 percent for aldosterone antagonist use, all relative to baseline results.

The company said on its website that it does not have enough of the active ingredient, powdered Thyroid gland, in stock to produce the medication.
