Researches report new results that may help in better treament for patients with Parkinson's disease

Scientists in the Academy of Finland's Neuroscience Research Programme have reported promising new results with potential implications for the treatment of Parkinson's disease. They have been studying the impacts of nerve growth factors in the treatment of PD, and their latest results show that a certain growth factor can be used to halt the progress of damage brought on by a nerve poison and possibly even restore the function of damaged cells.

Sagent Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a privately held specialty pharmaceutical company, today announced that it has launched fluconazole injection in premix bags. IMS Health estimates that 2008 U.S. sales of fluconazole injection approximated $18 million. Sagent will begin marketing and shipping fluconazole bags immediately.

Forest Laboratories announces phase 3 trial results for roflumilast

Forest Laboratories, Inc., an international pharmaceutical manufacturer and marketer and Nycomed, a privately owned pharmaceutical company, today announced that results of four phase III trials have been published in the prestigious peer-reviewed medical journal The Lancet showing that roflumilast, a phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4) inhibitor, improved lung function and reduced exacerbations in patients with moderate to severe COPD.

NIH awards $3.5-million grant to Tay-Sachs Gene Therapy Consortium for research on fatal genetic disorders

In a victory for families who dug into their own pockets to fund new research, the National Institutes of Health has awarded a $3.5-million grant to the Boston-based Tay-Sachs Gene Therapy Consortium to prepare a gene therapy for human clinical trials in a bid to halt the fatal genetic disorder.

Ochsner Medical Center selected to participate as an FDA investigative site in the PARTNER clinical trial

On Tuesday, August 11, 2009, an 82-year old New Orleans resident with severe aortic stenosis successfully had a heart valve replaced at Ochsner Medical Center using the same technique as angioplasty, a far cry from the traditional open heart procedure. Patients who are considered high-risk or non-operable for conventional open heart valve surgery now have a potential new research option available regionally only through The John Ochsner Heart & Vascular Institute.
