MEMS: Sensors made for automobiles are being used for healthcare devices

MEMS industry execs attending the annual MEMS Executive Congress last week were rapt by presentations and panel discussions by leading innovators in automotive, bio/medical, consumer electronics, mobile communications and energy. Buoyed by optimistic forecasts for microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) devices such as accelerometers and multi-axis gyros—increasingly used in mobile handsets and video games—they engaged with keynote speaker Dr. Mauro Ferrari, professor and director of The Division of NanoMedicine and Deputy Chairman of The University of Texas Department of Biomedical Engineering, whose proteomic NanoChips and multi-stage drug-delivery systems may one day ‘cure cancer.’

Most employers concerned over the ramifications of potential healthcare reform legislation: IDC study

IDC has released a new special research study on the market for employee benefits administration in the U.S., which shows that over 70% of all employers - both small and large - are either concerned or very concerned over the ramifications of potential healthcare reform legislation. While concerned with the as-yet-undetermined changes in legislation, the rising costs of providing employees with health and welfare benefits is even more of a concern to buyers, with over 80% reporting it as the top challenge they face.

New rapid screening methods for BPA using Waters ACQUITY UPLC published in ASTM International

Waters Corporation (NYSE: WAT) today hosted Dr. Lawrence Zintek, National Organic Methods Development Expert, United States Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 Central Regional Laboratory in Chicago, and author of two new rapid screening methods for Alkylphenols and Bisphenol A (BPA) using Waters® ACQUITY UPLC®/Quattro Premier(TM) XE (UPLC/MS/MS) recently published in American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) International. Dr. Zintek was the keynote speaker at a Waters' breakfast seminar held in conjunction with the Water Quality Technology Conference sponsored by the American Water Works Association in Seattle.

CMS policy changes to drive the sleep management devices market

According to Millennium Research Group (MRG), the global authority on medical technology market intelligence, policy changes made by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) will cause a surge in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) diagnostic testing and treatment. MRG's new US Market Opportunities for Respiratory and Sleep Management Devices 2010 report finds that increasing reimbursement opportunities for OSA diagnosis and treatment will drive the OSA market to $1.5 billion by 2014.
