Elevated levels of inflammatory biomarkers in individuals associated with high risk of COPD exacerbations

Simultaneously elevated levels of the biomarkers C-reactive protein, fibrinogen and leukocyte count in individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) were associated with increased risk of having exacerbations, even in those with milder COPD and in those without previous exacerbations, according to a study in the June 12 issue of JAMA.

Bacteria in the gut that are under attack by antibiotics have allies no one had anticipated, a team of Wyss Institute scientists has found. Gut viruses that usually commandeer the bacteria, it turns out, enable them to survive the antibiotic onslaught, most likely by handing them genes that help them withstand the drug.

Australia's PBAC recommends use of XIFAXAN 550 mg for hepatic encephalopathy

Norgine today announced that the Australian assessment body the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee has recommended the use of XIFAXAN 550 mg in the prevention of the recurrence of hepatic encephalopathy where other treatments have failed or are contraindicated; a potentially life-threatening neuropsychiatric condition associated with liver disease.
