Chinese SFDA approves Abbott's XIENCE V drug eluting stent for treating coronary artery disease

Abbott (NYSE: ABT) announced today that the Chinese State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) has approved its XIENCE V(R) Everolimus Eluting Coronary Stent System for the treatment of coronary artery disease (CAD) - the leading cause of death in China. XIENCE V is the only drug eluting stent to have demonstrated superiority over the TAXUS(R) Paclitaxel-Eluting Coronary Stent System (TAXUS) in the primary endpoints of two randomized, pivotal (phase III) clinical trials.

AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), the operator of the largest non-government HIV testing program in California, today praised the California Legislature for its passage of Assembly Bill 221, which cleared the Assembly on final concurrence (61-0) today and moves on to the Governor’s desk. AB 221 updates and streamlines the training of counselors for rapid HIV testing by exempting persons administering finger stick rapid HIV tests from the requirement for certification as a limited phlebotomy technician (LPT). It is widely expected that Schwarzenegger will sign the bill.

Quest Diagnostics' OVA1 ovarian cancer test cleared by the FDA

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today cleared the OVA1(TM) Test, the first blood test that, prior to surgery, can help physicians determine if a woman is at risk for a malignant pelvic mass. OVA1 is the first FDA-cleared laboratory test that can indicate the likelihood of ovarian cancer with high sensitivity prior to biopsy or exploratory surgery, even if radiological test results fail to indicate malignancy.

Phase IIa trial results of panobacumab released

Kenta Biotech has presented positive Phase IIa results of its lead drug candidate, panobacumab (KBPA101), showing it is safe and well tolerated in patients with hospital-acquired pneumonia caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Sectra reports increased sales and operating profit

IT and medical-technology company Sectra’s (STO:SECTB) net sales for the first quarter increased 13.7% to SEK 197.8 million (174.0) compared with the year-earlier period. Operating profit increased to SEK 10.1 million (0.9), corresponding to an operating margin of 5.1% (0.5) for the quarter. Profit after financial items amounted to SEK 3.5 million (6.2), corresponding to a profit margin of 1.8% (3.6). The Group’s order bookings amounted to SEK 152.1 million (175.2).
