Antiemetic-regimen with fosaprepitant injection provides similar protection against CINV as oral EMEND

Merck announced today results from a new non-inferiority trial of an antiemetic regimen containing fosaprepitant dimeglumine administered as a single intravenous (IV) 150-mg dose in combination with a 5-HT3 antagonist and dexamethasone compared with a three-day regimen of aprepitant with a 5-HT3 antagonist and dexamethasone for the prevention of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) in patients receiving a first cycle of cisplatin-based chemotherapy.

AACE, AME and ETA jointly publish guidelines for diagnosis and management of thyroid nodules

Three of the world's most respected medical associations for the treatment of thyroid disease recently issued joint guidelines for the diagnosis and management of thyroid nodules. The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, the Associazione Medici Endocrinologi and European Thyroid Association jointly published the guidelines online this week, and the executive summary will be published in the next issue of their respective journals.

Study shows direct cellular interaction between endocannabinoids and alcohol in the brain

In findings that should finally put to rest a decade of controversy in the field of neurobiology, a team at The Scripps Research Institute has found decisive evidence that a specific neurotransmitter system-the endocannabinoid system-is active in a brain region known to play a key role in the processing of memory, emotional reactions, and addiction formation. The new study also shows that this system can dampen the effects of alcohol, suggesting an avenue for the development of drugs to combat alcohol addiction.

Study suggests potential ingredient in rice for prevention of cardiovascular diseases

Protein Potential receives Phase II SBIR Grant to develop vaccine for prevention of P. vivax infections

Protein Potential LLC has received support from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases of the NIH in the form of a Phase II Small Business Innovation Research Grant. The three-year award totaling approximately $3 million will support translational research to develop a vaccine for the prevention of malaria caused by the parasite Plasmodium vivax.

High-fructose corn syrup makes rats fat: Princeton University study questioned

"HFCS makes rats fat? I can hardly believe that Princeton sent out a press release yesterday announcing the results of this rat study. The press release says: "Rats with access to high-fructose corn syrup gained significantly more weight than those with access to table sugar, even when their overall caloric intake was the same."

Neogen's third-quarter fiscal 2010 revenues up 21%

Neogen Corporation announced today that its net income for the third quarter of FY 2010, which ended Feb. 28, increased 38% from the previous year to $3,881,000. Adjusted for a 3-for-2 stock split effective Dec. 15, net income in the quarter rose to $0.17 per share, compared to the prior year's $0.12.

BIO praises Reps. for introducing bill to extend Cellulosic Ethanol Production Tax Credit

Consistent, sustained and diverse federal support is the key to rapid growth of a sustainable advanced biofuel industry. The Biotechnology Industry Organization today thanked Reps. Earl Pomeroy (D-N.D.) and John Shimkus (R-Ill.) for introducing a bill to extend by three years the Cellulosic Ethanol Production Tax Credit. BIO also called for extending tax code parity to algae-based biofuels and a full range of innovative biobased technologies.

Avid, Cardinal Health partner to detect Alzheimer's disease in living patients

Currently, Alzheimer's disease cannot be definitively diagnosed until after death, when a brain autopsy is performed on a patient and evidence of beta-amyloid plaque deposits in the brain – which are a characteristic pathology of the disease – can be found. Accurate diagnosis during life can be challenging, particularly in the early stages of Alzheimer's, when symptoms are mild and non-definitive. However, Avid Radiopharmaceuticals, Inc. and Cardinal Health are working together to change that.

Sudden deaths attributed to cocaine use; drug remains a growing health problem in Europe

Forensic pathologists have shown that over three per cent of all sudden deaths in south-west Spain are related to the use of cocaine. They believe their findings can be extrapolated to much of the rest of Europe, indicating that cocaine use is a growing public health problem in Europe and that there is no such thing as "safe" recreational use of small amounts of the drug.
