Actavis, Inc. (NYSE: ACT) today announced that it has received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on its Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) for Oxymorphone Hydrochloride Extended-release Tablets, 5 mg, 10 mg, 20 mg, 30 mg and 40 mg.

Two upcoming votes in House part of GOP continuing assault on health law

House Speaker John Boehner said the chamber will vote next week to delay the 2010 health-care law's requirement that most Americans carry health insurance. At his weekly news conference today, the speaker said it's not fair for President Barack Obama's administration to keep that provision in effect while postponing enforcement of the requirement that businesses provide their workers with insurance (Hunter, 7/11).

Mass. employer health insurance mandate repeal moves forward

Gov. Deval Patrick has agreed to end a state mandate that employers provide health insurance to their employees, included in Massachusetts' 2006 health care overhaul, because a federal law -- which is now delayed a year -- was set to impose a similar mandate on employers. The repeal is included in the 2014 budget.

Research roundup: Prevention task force PSA testing recommendations often ignored; Medicaid expansion for minorities; ER and aging population

The authors examined how the growing number of elderly Americans would affect the large and increasing part of non-catastrophic outpatient care. Using Census Bureau and nationally representative survey data, researchers quantified the number of ED visits that would occur if the demographic structure of the U.S. population changed, but everything else remained the same. "We observed that it is actually infants and young adults, not the elderly, who account for the largest number of ED visits," the authors write, and conclude: However, the data do predict increases in visit lengths and the likelihood of hospitalization.

Community health centers get $150 million to help enroll people in new marketplaces

Community health centers across the country will share in $150 million in grants that Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said Wednesday will help them enroll up to 3.7 million Americans in the new marketplaces this fall. HHS on Wednesday announced that 1,200 centers will get at least $59,000 each, money available through the health care law (Bunis, 7/10).

Medicare to propose new doctor payment for managing multiple chronic conditions

Medicare is proposing paying doctors for managing Medicare patients with multiple chronic conditions starting in 2015. In the meantime, a Medicare plan to deny an Eli Lily diagnostic test to patients unless they are enrolled in a clinical trial is decried by some Alzheimer's treatment advocates.

State highlights: Disabled at risk at Calif. facilities, audit finds; Advocates push for single policy for kids' medical, dental coverage in exchange plans; Ga. maternal mortality

Californians with developmental disabilities who are cared for at state facilities are being put at risk by outdated policies and inadequate investigations of abuse, the state auditor's office said Tuesday. Allegations that residents have been raped, shot with stun guns and otherwise abused have not been acted on satisfactorily, auditors found. The California Department of Developmental Services cares for 1,480 severely disabled people in five facilities throughout the state (McGreevy, 7/9).

The government of Sweden is partnering with psychologists at SMU to launch a parenting program shown to reduce child abuse. A two-year study funded by the Swedish government will look at the feasibility of implementing the program nationwide in that country.

Health insurance exchanges: Vermont announces rates, state marketing efforts take shape

Vermont regulators on Monday announced monthly rates for health insurance to be sold under Vermont Health Connect, the health insurance exchange being set up to comply with the federal Affordable Care Act. Middle- and upper-class consumers who begin buying through Vermont Health Connect when it takes hold of Vermont's individual and small-group health insurance markets in January won't notice much difference in costs of insurance and benefits provided (Gram, 7/8).
