Researchers at the University of Chicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Center (UCCCC) have identified a gene that contributes to the development of acute myeloid leukemia (AML). This pivotal finding follows 40 years of University of Chicago research that has slowly unraveled the genetic basis of leukemia.

New insights on cochlea may help develop better hearing devices

A healthy ear is much better at detecting and transmitting sound than even the most advanced hearing aid. But now researchers reporting in the August 20 issue of the Biophysical Journal, a Cell Press publication, have uncovered new insights into how the ear -- in particular, the cochlea -- processes and amplifies sound.

FDA grants Orphan Drug Designation to ADXS-HPV for treatment of HPV-associated anal cancer

Advaxis, Inc., (OTCQB: ADXS), a leader in developing the next generation of immunotherapies for cancer and infectious diseases, announced that it has been granted Orphan Drug Designation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Office of Orphan Products Development (OOPD) for ADXS-HPV, its lead drug candidate, for the treatment of human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated anal cancer.

GE, UW scientists to develop new medical device for detecting infectious disease

You've heard of on-demand TV, now imagine on-demand medical diagnosis - anytime, anywhere in the world. Scientists at GE Global Research, the technology development arm of the General Electric Co. GSTS Pathology recently hosted their first Innovation Academy event in London (28 June 2013). This inaugural scientific symposium welcomed over 100 attendees, offering participants great networking opportunities and the chance to hear presentations from a group of GSTS experts. Discussions were focused into four tracks: Child Health, Keeping People Healthy, Infectious Diseases, and Next Generation Diagnostics. On show was the innovative approach to laboratory medicine that can be found throughout the GSTS Pathology organisation.
