In a biological quirk that promises to provide researchers with a new approach for studying and potentially treating Fragile X syndrome, scientists at the University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS) have shown that knocking out a gene important for messenger RNA (mRNA) translation in neurons restores memory deficits and reduces behavioral symptoms in a mouse model of a prevalent human neurological disease.

In states that decide not to expand Medicaid under the health law, more than 5 million people may be left without coverage. Oregon's expansion has already lowered the number of people there without coverage. Exchange issues are also examined in Maryland, Florida, Ohio and Alabama.

WHO: Iron deficiency causes loss of 48,225 disability-adjusted life-years worldwide

Data supporting the need for better recognition of iron deficiency will be presented this week at the United European Gastroenterology Week Congress in Berlin. Iron deficiency is frequently under-diagnosed, resulting in increased hospitalisation, reduced quality of life and higher death rates in patients with comorbid conditions. The WHO has estimated that iron deficiency causes the loss of 48,225 disability-adjusted life-years worldwide, more than is seen with lung cancer.

For childhood cancer survivors, risk factors associated with lifestyle, particularly hypertension, dramatically increase the likelihood of developing serious heart problems as adults, according to a national study led by St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
