Phase III EXTEND trial results of pixantrone announced

Cell Therapeutics, Inc. (CTI) today released updated 18-month follow-up clinical data for its phase III EXTEND (PIX 301) trial of pixantrone (BBR2778) for patients with advanced, relapsed or refractory, aggressive non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). Responses were evaluated by an Independent Assessment Panel that was blinded to patient assignment.

Study reveals ineffectiveness of insulin and metformin against inflammatory biomarkers

In patients with recent onset type-2 diabetes, treatment with insulin or the diabetes drug metformin did not reduce inflammatory biomarkers, such as high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, although the treatment did improve glucose control, according to a study in the September 16 issue of JAMA.

NCI-funded SPORE grant aims to improve kidney cancer treatment

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) has awarded Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) an $11.5 million, five-year SPORE grant to focus on cancers of the kidney. Michael Atkins, MD, Deputy Director of BIDMC's Division of Hematology/Oncology, will oversee the grant, which involves collaborations with Brigham and Women's Hospital, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and Massachusetts General Hospital via the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center.

Pre-clinical studies of ID-12 orally-bioavailable inhibitor completes

ChemDiv Inc. of San Diego, and iDialog (Intellektualniy Dialog) of Yaroslavl, Russia, announced today the successful completion of a pre-clinical development and the subsequent nomination of ID-12 as lead clinical development candidate for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C. This novel small molecule orally-bioavailable inhibitor of hepatitis C virus (HCV) blocks early stage of viral infection.

New peptide-based cancer vaccine tested in genital cancer patients

Preventive vaccination against infectious diseases has been a major milestone for the health of modern society. The development of therapeutic vaccination against established diseases is much more difficult. For more than 100 years researchers have already tried to develop cancer vaccines and now first promising clinical results raise hopes. FDA clears Olerup SSP’s Taq-polymerase-free HLA typing kit for sale in the U.S.

Olerup SSP, a wholly owned subsidiary of LinkMed (STO:LMED), has had its Taq-polymerase-free HLA typing kit registered and cleared by the FDA. This means that Olerup SSP’s entire product range for HLA typing, with or without Taq polymerase, can now be marketed and sold to a greater number of healthcare centers in North America.

FDA approves BioVex' design of a Phase III clinical trial to evaluate OncoVEX

BioVex Inc, a biotechnology company developing clinical stage treatments for cancer and the prevention of infectious disease, announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the design of a single, pivotal, Phase III clinical trial evaluating its lead product, OncoVEX (GM-CSF), for the first-line treatment of patients with squamous cell cancer of the head and neck.

Decision Resources, one of the world's leading research and advisory firms for pharmaceutical and healthcare issues finds that, following its launch and uptake, GlaxoSmithKline's angiogenesis inhibitor Votrient (formerly Armala) will garner sales of $640 million by 2018 and will take significant market share away from Pfizer's Sutent. In 2008, Sutent had accounted for 61 percent of sales in the angiogenesis inhibitor drug class.

Researchers use mTeSR1 medium for deriving human induced pluripotent stem cells

In a landmark paper, researchers at Stanford University have described a new way to derive human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) without the use of contaminating mouse feeder cells. Using adipose cells as the starting cell population and mTeSR™1, a defined medium that allows the expansion of human embryonic and induced pluripotent stem cells without the use of feeders, the researchers were able to fully reprogram the cells to the pluripotent state.

A network of proteins underlying the plasma membrane keeps epithelial cells in shape and maintains their orderly hexagonal packing in the mouse lens, say Nowak et al. The study will appear in the September 21, 2009 issue of the Journal of Cell Biology (online September 14).
