FDA approves new labeling for psoriasis drug Raptiva

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today announced labeling changes, including a Boxed Warning, to highlight the risks of life-threatening infections, including progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), with the use of Raptiva (efalizumab). The labeling changes are based on the FDA's post-market surveillance.

Lab tests online to benefit Czech Republic

EDMA, the European Diagnostic Manufacturers Association is proud to announce that the multilingual website, Lab Tests Online is now also available in Czech. The website, an online encyclopaedia on laboratory testing and related conditions, has been developed in Czech by the Czech Society of Clinical Biochemistry, CSKB, in cooperation with the national and European Diagnostics industry associations, CZEDMA and EDMA.

Global Health Group to assist Namibia in developing strategic malaria control plan

A five-member team from the University of California-San Francisco's Global Health Group will help Namibia develop a strategic plan aimed at eradicating malaria in the country, the New Era reports. The team, which arrived in Namibia on Oct. 5, has conducted site visits in the country's malaria-endemic northern region and met with Prime Minister Nahas Angula on Wednesday to discuss malaria control efforts.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Thursday said that many large pharmaceutical companies -- including Abbott Labs, Boehringer Ingelheim, GlaxoSmithKline and Pfizer -- plan to increase their efforts to develop HIV/AIDS drugs and diagnostics for impoverished regions, Reuters reports.
