ZymoGenetics' IL-21 Phase 2 trial data in metastatic melanoma to be presented at ASCO annual meeting

ZymoGenetics, Inc. announced that final progression-free survival results will be presented from a Phase 2 clinical trial in patients with Stage 4 metastatic melanoma at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) annual meeting in Chicago on June 5, 2010 in an oral presentation. The open-label multi-center clinical trial evaluated 3 dose regimens of Interleukin 21 (IL-21) in 40 patients with no prior systemic therapy for metastatic melanoma.

Data from Phase 3 clinical trials of PROVENGE in advanced prostate cancer to be presented at ASCO 2010

Dendreon Corporation today announced the upcoming presentation of data from integrated analyses of three Phase 3 PROVENGE (sipuleucel-T) clinical trials of an autologous cellular immunotherapy in advanced prostate cancer, to be presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology in Chicago on Monday, June 7 at 8:00 a.m. CT.

Long-term data demonstrates clinical benefits of Exelixis XL184 for medullary thyroid cancer

Exelixis, Inc. today reported long-term results in a cohort of 37 medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) patients who participated in the phase 1 study of XL184. Dr. Razelle Kurzrock from the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX will present the data in a Clinical Science Symposium (Abstract #5502) on Monday, June 7 at 10:15 AM at the 2010 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology in Chicago.

Phase 1/2 clinical trial data of Oncophage for recurrent high-grade glioma

Antigenics today announced that data from a multi-center Phase 1/2 clinical trial of Oncophage (vitespen) for recurrent high-grade glioma (brain cancer) was presented at the International Conference on Brain Tumor Research and Therapy. The study was conducted by the Brain Tumor Research Center at the University of California, San Francisco.

Studies suggest potent therapeutic effects of rufinamide in bipolar disorder, depressive and anxiety disorders

This study formulates the hypothesis that rufinamide, a drug so far used against epilepsy, may also be effective in bipolar disorder, depressive and anxiety disorders, panic disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder, eating disorders, and substance use disorders. It is just an hypothesis based on two cases that needs to be confirmed by specific studies.

The Whittemore Peterson Institute for Neuro-Immune Disease (WPI) and Cerus Corporation announced positive results from a study demonstrating the efficacy of the INTERCEPT Blood System to inactivate XMRV, a human retrovirus, in donated platelet components.

152 research and training grants awarded to researchers at 93 institutions nationwide

The American Cancer Society, the largest non-government, not-for-profit funding source of cancer research in the United States, has awarded 152 new national research and training grants totaling $50,717,000 in the first of two grants cycles for 2010. The grants, primarily to early career researchers, cover a broad range of investigator-initiated ideas at 93 institutions nationwide, from whether cadmium exposure increases the risk of endometrial cancer, to studies of plant and bacterial-bourne compounds, to a study on a protein called survivin that could lead to novel drugs targeting prostate cancer.

Obese patients with COPD improve following pulmonary rehabilitation program: Research

Obese patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease stand to gain as much from pulmonary rehabilitation as their slimmer counterparts, even though as a group they have a lower exercise capacity, according to new research from the University Hospitals of Leicester in the UK.

Trubion Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced the acceptance of two Phase 1 data presentations on SBI-087 (PF-05230895) at the 2010 annual congress of the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) in Rome, Italy.
