In a BMJ analysis examining the future of the WHO, David Legge, scholar emeritus at Australia's La Trobe University, notes "[a] substantial shortfall in the funds available for basic administrative functions led WHO's director general, Margaret Chan, to initiate another reform of the WHO in 2010," and "outlines the problems and what the reforms are trying to achieve."

The George Washington University (GW) School of Medicine and Health Sciences' (SMHS) Doctoral Physical Therapy program and Physician Assistant program will be hosting a health and wellness expo for persons living with intellectual and developmental disabilities (ages 16 and up). Caregivers are encouraged to attend, as well.

Older patients who visited local ERs for chest pain or breathing problems and had chest x-rays reveal unknown spinal fractures, were more apt to receive osteoporosis treatment afterward if a simple intervention was used, recently published medical research from the University of Alberta has found.

Stroke survivors who smoke risk their life

In a study detailed in the American Heart Association’s journal Stroke, researchers recruited 1,589 stroke survivors between 1996 and 1999 and examined the occurrence of deaths, recurrent strokes and heart attacks over a 10-year period. They found smokers and former smokers who suffered stroke had greater risk of death, multiple strokes or heart attack when compared to patients who were never smokers.

Financially strapped state and local governments are saving billions of dollars on health insurance by cutting back on free coverage for employees and raising worker contributions, a USA Today analysis finds. Government workers still enjoy more generous health benefits than privately employed workers but the advantage has narrowed from $1,523 in 2007 to $891 in 2012, adjusted for inflation, federal data show.
