InVivo files biopolymer scaffold IDE with FDA to initiate spinal cord injury clinical trial

InVivo Therapeutics today announced that the Company has submitted an Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for a proprietary biopolymer scaffolding device to protect and support spinal tissue and prevent secondary injury, including inflammation and glial scarring, following traumatic spinal cord injury.

Hydrogel capsule could simultaneously deliver different types of drugs

Researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology have designed a multiple-compartment gel capsule that could be used to simultaneously deliver drugs of different types. The researchers used a simple "one-pot" method to prepare the hydrogel capsules, which measure less than one micron.

Patient accrual complete in Provectus PH-10 Phase 2C clinical trial for treatment of psoriasis

Provectus Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a development-stage oncology and dermatology biopharmaceutical company, has completed patient accrual in its Phase 2C clinical trial of PH-10 for the treatment of psoriasis. PH-10, an aqueous hydrogel formulation of Rose Bengal disodium for topical administration to the skin, is being studied for the treatment of cutaneous skin disorders, specifically psoriasis and atopic dermatitis.

NIH funds Rice University study of new materials for growing replacement heart valves

A team of bioengineers from Rice University is bringing a promising new strategy for growing replacement heart valves closer to reality, thanks to a four-year, $1.2 million grant from the National Institutes of Health. The team hopes to use gel-like materials to generate three-dimensional patterns called scaffolds that can simultaneously mimic the complex structural and physical properties of heart-valve tissues and guide the behavior of tissue-forming cells.
