Neurosurgeon performs first endoscopic removal of spinal tumor at Rhode Island Hospital

The spinal tumor grew back. Even though the 16-year old patient endured surgery a year earlier to remove and diagnose the lesion, it was back and its cause unknown. Determined to identify the tumor tissue and set the patient on an appropriate treatment regimen, Albert Telfeian, M.D., a neurosurgeon at Rhode Island Hospital and Hasbro Children's Hospital, performed the first reported case of extracting the tumor endoscopically while the patient was awake and under a local anesthetic.

Clementia Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced that it has commenced enrollment in the second part (Part B) of its natural history study in patients with fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP), a rare, severely disabling congenital myopathy characterized by painful, recurrent episodes of soft tissue swelling (flare-ups) that result in the formation of new, abnormal (heterotopic) bone in muscles, tendons and ligaments.

Doctors from the Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation at Children's National Health System are the first in the United States to treat osteoid osteoma, a benign but painful bone tumor that commonly occurs in children and young adults, using an experimental magnetic resonance-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound (MR-HIFU) method.

A rare congenital genetic mutation means that those affected do not feel pain. However, what seems, at first sight, to be a blessing, can have serious consequences. It means that injuries or diseases can go undetected for a long time. The affected gene was identified by an international research team from MedUni Vienna, the University of Munich and the University of Cambridge.

Anti-osteoporotic medication is not an effective means for preventing hip fractures among the elderly, concludes a study recently published in the BMJ. According to Professor Teppo Järvinen from the University of Helsinki, who heads the research group, the prevalent assumption that brittle bones cause hip fractures is fundamentally flawed.
