NIH funds the University of California's consortium for immune disorder research

The University of California, San Francisco has been designated to lead a new consortium that will study a group of severe immune disorders known as primary immunodeficiencies and aims to improve treatment for these often life-threatening diseases. The Primary Immune Deficiency Treatment Consortium comprises 13 centers throughout the United States and has a $6.25 million funding commitment over five years from the National Institutes of Health.

Histostem awarded U.S. patent for isolation of mesenchymal stem cells

Stem Cell Therapy International, Inc. announced that its soon to be subsidiary, Histostem Ltd. of South Korea ("Histostem"), has been awarded U.S. Patent Number 7,582,477 B2, entitled "Method of Isolating and Culturing Mesenchymal Stem Cell Derived from Cryopreserved Umbilical Cord Blood." This patented method is utilized across the company for research, clinical and cosmetic applications.

Study demonstrates coexistence of visuospatial and phonological disorders in dyslexics

Chinese-speaking children with dyslexia have a disorder that is distinctly different, and perhaps more complicated and severe, than that of English speakers. Those differences can be seen in the brain and in the performance of Chinese children on visual and oral language tasks, reveals a report published online on October 12th in Current Biology, a Cell Press publication.

Researchers at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, have identified two genes believed to play a role in the development of endometrial cancer. These results may eventually lead to better diagnosis and treatment of this increasingly common form of cancer.

Celator Pharmaceuticals today announced that it has completed enrollment in its Phase 2 multicenter, randomized, open-label clinical trial of CPX-351 (Cytarabine:Daunorubicin) Liposome Injection versus conventional cytarabine and daunorubicin therapy ("7+3") in patients 60-75 years of age with untreated acute myeloid leukemia (AML).
