The FDA first announced their intention to provide a safety update about Essure late yesterday evening. Today's much anticipated report comes on the heals of a private citizen petition that raised serious concerns about the Essure Birth Control Implant and resulted in the launch of an FDA investigation into the birth control device.

Florida State Board of Pharmacy approves Unique Pharmaceuticals' license for sterile distribution

UNIQUE PHARMACEUTICALS, a 503B current Good Manufacturing Practices (CGMP) Outsourcing Facility, today announced its licensure approval in Florida. The Florida State Board of Pharmacy review committee approved Unique Pharmaceuticals' license June 10 for distribution of sterile and non-sterile compounded medications.

Since the 2009 discovery that energy-burning brown fat can be active in adults, research has raced ahead to understand this tissue and exploit it to treat the epidemic of obesity. Active brown fat also may assist in directly easing the burden of diabetes and related metabolic diseases by lowering the levels of glucose and fatty acids in the bloodstream. But progress in studying human brown fat often has been slowed by difficulties in obtaining and studying samples of the human cells that develop into brown fat.

Implantable antibiotic-laden sponges help prevent sternal wound infections during cardiac surgery

Cardiac surgeons often "crack open" the flat bone that forms the middle front section of the chest, known as the sternum, in order to reach important structures. When a sternal wound infection (SWI) occurs, serious complications and even death may result. Implanting antibiotic-laden sponges between the sternal halves before closure has been adapted to prevent infections.

A new paper in the British Medical Journal by Jan Blustein, M.D., Ph.D., of New York University's Wagner School and a professor of Medicine and Population Health at NYU School of Medicine and Jianmeng Liu, M.D., Ph.D., of Peking University examines the evidence as to whether newborns delivered by Cesarean section are more likely to develop chronic diseases later in life.
