FTC works to crack down on health care 'discount' plans

Reuters: "The Federal Trade Commission said on Wednesday it is working with 24 states to crack down on sellers of medical discount plans that market them as health insurance that covers doctors, hospitals and other services." The prevalence of such plans has increased since March, when Congress passed its health overhaul.

Ohio State University procures IonFlux 16 high throughput automated patch clamp instrument

Fluxion Biosciences, Inc. announced today that the Ohio State University Department of Pharmacology has purchased the IonFlux 16, the first high throughput automated patch clamp instrument of its kind geared towards the academic researcher. The IonFlux instrument will enable large scale pharmacology experiments on this group's nAChR targets, which previously were not feasible using a manual patch clamp rig.

Nautilus announces conviction of exercise equipment counterfeiters

In its continuing actions against counterfeiters of Bowflex® products, fitness company Nautilus, Inc. cooperated with and aided U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in obtaining the conviction of Chunchai "Katherine" Yu for bribery and trafficking in counterfeit exercise equipment. Yu was convicted by a federal jury in southern California on July 15, 2010 and faces a maximum sentence of 90 years in prison and fines totalling $12.5 million.

Weifang Shengtai to supply Kelun with 10,000 tons of dextrose monohydrate injection grade

Shengtai Pharmaceutical, Inc. announced on August 6, 2010 that Weifang Shengtai Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd ("Weifang Shengtai"), its operating subsidiary in China, entered into an agreement with Kelun Pharmaceutical ("Kelun") to supply Kelun with 10 thousand tons of dextrose monohydrate injection grade: Kelun Guizhou will be supplied with 7 hundred tons and Kelun Sichuan with 9.3 thousand tons. Survey shows web users access social media sites in emergency situations

A new American Red Cross survey shows many web users would turn to social media to seek help for themselves or others during emergencies—and they expect first responders to be listening.The online survey asked 1,058 adults about their use of social media sites in emergency situations. It found that if they needed help and couldn't reach 9-1-1, one in five would try to contact responders through a digital means such as e-mail, websites or social media.

According to a Lancet Comment, "alcohol remains conspicuously absent from the larger field of research and programming in HIV and substance use. ... Patterns of hazardous alcohol consumption prevail in countries with the most severe HIV epidemics, notably eastern and southern Africa." In addition, "hazardous drinking patterns also dominate in the concentrated epidemics of eastern Europe and Asia, where alcohol use by injecting drug users and other marginalised groups might be an additional barrier to effective efforts to prevent HIV infection."

Study uncovers leading causes of non-fatal injuries among older adults in China

Falls are the most common injury for both urban and rural elderly in China, responsible for more than two-thirds of all injuries in people 65 and older, according to a new study by researchers from China and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health's Center for Injury Research and Policy. This is the first study to uncover the leading causes of non-fatal injuries among older adults in China, who make up 9 percent of the total population.

Anti-vaccine group accused of unauthorized fundraising

The Australian Vaccination Network is involved in controversy yet again. The Bangalow-based anti-vaccination group has been given a timeline of 28 days to answer to claims that it breached charitable fundraising legislation on several occasions. It was only last month that the Health Care Complaints Commission had accused AVN of spreading misleading information about the dangers of immunization through its website.
