Personal health information began to flow into members' electronic health records this month – available through ibxpress.com, the company's member website.

Que She herbal weight loss supplement contains harmful ingredients, FDA warns

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today warned that Que She, marketed as an herbal weight loss supplement, contains active pharmaceutical ingredients not listed on the product label that could harm consumers, especially those with cardiovascular conditions.

Medicare agency releases data on hospital performance

MedPage Today: "The public can now review data on the quality of outpatient care provided by individual hospitals at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services' Hospital Compare website. The site previously contained only data on inpatient care quality. All the data are derived from records of Medicare patients treated at more than 3,600 hospitals nationwide."

Health Care REIT reports $292.9M of gross investments during second-quarter 2010

Health Care REIT, Inc. announced today that it completed $292.9 million of gross investments during the second quarter of 2010. During the quarter, the company had dispositions of $14.6 million, resulting in net new investments of $278.3 million. For the six months ended June 30, 2010, the company completed $877.6 million of gross investments, offset by $47.5 million of asset sales and loan payoffs, which generated $830.1 million of net new investments.

20% of Canadians less sympathetic towards lung cancer sufferers

Canadian lung cancer patients are likely to suffer significant stigma due to the disease's link to smoking, a connection that may impact the care and treatment patients receive. According to a 16-country survey carried out by Ipsos MORI on behalf of The Global Lung Cancer Coalition, one in five Canadians admit feeling less sympathetic towards lung cancer sufferers because of its known association with smoking cigarettes and other tobacco products.

AUGIB patients more likely to suffer further bleeding with early red blood cell transfusion

Doctors have called for an urgent review of transfusion policies after a UK-wide study of over 200 hospitals found that patients admitted with acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding (AUGIB) are more than twice as likely to suffer further bleeding if they receive a red blood cell transfusion within 12 hours.

Physio-Control, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Medtronic, Inc.,, announced the company's recent initiation of a field correction on certain LIFEPAK 20/20e defibrillator/monitors manufactured prior to January 9, 2009. Analysis conducted by Physio-Control verified a possible battery (DC) power malfunction on the affected devices. Positive reviews of health overhaul implementation so far but potential stumbling blocks lie ahead

The New York Times notes an uptick in support for the health overhaul in polls as parts of the law begin to take effect, as well as some positive reviews - even from conservatives - about the administration's performance in implementing the measures. Stuart Butler, a vice president of the Heritage Foundation, for instance, said, "I give them an A for effort. But there are land mines down the road because the law is fundamentally flawed." The latest poll by the Kaiser Family Foundation shows 48 percent hold a favorable view of the new law, while 41 percent oppose it.
