Adding stereotactic radiosurgery – which entails delivering radiation to specific points in the brain while sparing normal tissue – after whole brain radiation therapy helps certain patients with cancer that has spread to the brain live longer, says a new study by researchers at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia.

“Contrary to the myth, epileptic seizures are not more common during a full moon,” said Selim Benbadis, MD, associate professor of neurology and neurosurgery at the USF College of Medicine. “In fact, we found the number of epileptic seizures was lowest during the full moon and highest in the moon’s last quarter.”

Thompson today announced $498 million in awards to states, territories and four major metropolitan areas to strengthen the ability of hospitals and other health care facilities to respond to bioterror attacks, infectious diseases, and natural disasters that may cause mass casualties.

£1.8m Unit for treating teenagers with cancer at University Hospital of Wales

A Welsh donor has already given a massive £650,000 and Teenage Cancer Trust has pledged £650,000 from its central funds. On Monday 24th May, Teenage Cancer Trust will launch its fundraising campaign for the Unit at St David’s Hotel, Cardiff Bay. The charity is looking to raise a minimum of £500,000 to reach their target.
