First patient dosed in NCI-sponsored Phase 1/2 trial of belinostat

Spectrum Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a commercial-stage biotechnology company with a primary focus in oncology and hematology, and TopoTarget A/S, today announced that the first patient has been dosed in a National Cancer Institute -sponsored Phase 1/2 trial of belinostat in combination with cisplatin, doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide in the first line treatment of advanced or recurrent thymic malignancies.

PharmAthene suspends work on SparVax research and development contract with BARDA

PharmAthene, Inc., a biodefense company specializing in the development and commercialization of medical countermeasures against chemical and biological threats, announced today that pursuant to the Federal Acquisition Regulations and pending a ruling in a protest recently filed by a competitor the Department of Health and Human Services, through the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), has suspended work under the modification the Company announced on February 23, 2010 to its existing contract with BARDA for the research and development of SparVax™. June 11, 2010 is the deadline to rule on the protest.

FDA to have greater tobacco and cigarette control

Starting Tuesday, June 22 the Food and Drug Administration will have far greater control over how tobacco and cigarettes are marketed, distributed and sold. The announcement on Thursday, March 18 was made by Kathleen Sebelius, the US Health and Human Services Secretary.

Defrauding Medicare: Hamilton, N.J. hospital to pay $6.35M for settling allegations

Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Hamilton, a New Jersey-based hospital, has agreed to pay $6.35 million to settle allegations that the hospital defrauded Medicare, the Justice Department announced today. Two lawsuits filed against the Hamilton, N.J., facility alleged that the hospital fraudulently inflated its charges to Medicare patients to obtain larger reimbursements from the federal health care program.
