Amerigroup reports net income of $32.8M for fourth quarter 2011

Amerigroup Corporation today announced that net income for the fourth quarter of 2011 was $32.8 million, or $0.67 per diluted share, versus $48.1 million, or $0.96 per diluted share, for the third quarter of 2011.

In their latest move in the battle over contraception coverage, top Republicans in Congress are going for broke: They're now pushing a bill that would allow employers and insurance companies to pick and choose which health benefits to provide based simply on executives' personal moral beliefs. ... Last week, Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) offered a "conscience amendment," to the law, pitching it as a way to allay religious employers' qualms about providing birth control to their employees.

Obama praises congressional deal on doctor pay, payroll taxes

President Obama is praising an emerging congressional deal to extend the 2% payroll tax cut through 2012, and said he wants to sign it into law as soon as possible. "For starters, I'm glad to see that Congress seems to be on the way to making progress on extending the payroll tax cut so that taxes don't go up on you and 160 million working Americans," Obama told employees of the Master Lock company in Milwaukee today.

CMS signals it may delay deadline on new codes to be used by doctors, hospitals

Acting Director Marilyn Tavenner says the agency will re-examine the October 2013 deadline for the coding system, known as ICD-10. It expands the number of codes used for billing medical services.

More than one in six Americans younger than 65 could have access to help with their health insurance costs as a result of the health law. Red and blue congressional districts look remarkably similar here. Republican districts have, on average, an estimated 18 percent of the nonelderly people eligible for help with health insurance costs under the reform law. Democratic districts have about the same, 17 percent.

Kansas House approves 'compact' bill opposing health law; Conn., Alaska moving ahead with exchanges; Mass. reform very popular

The proposed change has the support of Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman, who chairs the exchange board. The bill would add two voting members to the board. One would be a small employer and ... [the other] would be "a consumer of specialized health care services for a disability, a chronic illness or special needs, or of health care services."

Obama 2013 budget would cut $360 billion from Medicaid and Medicare

The budget released Monday would trim spending on federal health-care programs by about $360 billion over the next decade, primarily by reducing payments to drug companies and other providers. Starting in 2017, Obama also proposes to raise Medicare premiums for new retirees and seniors with higher incomes, start charging co-payments for home health-care services, and penalize patients who buy Medigap policies to take care of Medicare co-payments and deductibles.

Fewer health care dollars would flow to states under Obama budget plan

The president wants to phase out a Medicaid provider tax that Malloy has used to help balance his budget. The White House also wants to "blend" Medicaid rates with the rates received from the federal government for a health program for children. That could mean fewer federal health dollars for Connecticut.
