A mammogram is a safe test used to look for any problems with a woman's breasts. The test uses a special, low-dose x-ray machine to take pictures of both breasts. The results are recorded on x-ray film or directly onto a computer for a radiologist to examine.

Mammograms allow the doctor to have a closer look for breast lumps and changes in breast tissue. They can show small lumps or growths that a doctor or woman may not be able to feel when doing a clinical breast exam. "Mammography" is the best screening tool that doctors have for finding breast cancer.

If a lump is found, your doctor may order other tests, such as ultrasound or a biopsy--a test where a small amount of tissue is taken from the lump and area around the lump. The tissue is sent to a lab to look for cancer or changes that may mean cancer is likely to develop. Breast lumps or growths can be benign (not cancer) or malignant (cancer). Finding breast cancer early means that a woman has a better chance of surviving the disease. There are also more choices for treatment when breast cancer is found early.

ASAPS supports new national registry for breast implants

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) announces today its support of a new national registry for breast implants that will be compiled by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) in collaboration with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This registry will document reported cases of a very rare condition, Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (ALCL), in the presence of breast implants.

The registry is being developed in response to reports of a rare lymphoma--Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (ALCL)—in a very small number of women with breast implants.

New study finds disparities in chlamydia screening

A new study from the Indiana University School of Medicine and the Regenstrief Institute has found that Black and especially Hispanic young women are screened for chlamydia at a significantly higher rate than young white women. This discrepancy in screening rates may contribute to nationwide reporting of higher rates of this sexually transmitted disease among minority young women.

BSGI/MBI provides additional information when conventional imaging is indeterminate in diagnosing breast cancer

Dr. Barbara Ward and others of Weinstein Imaging determined that Breast-Specific Gamma Imaging/Molecular Breast Imaging (BSGI/MBI) provides additional information when conventional imaging is indeterminate and greater confidence is required to improve diagnostic accuracy. The data from the retrospective study demonstrated that BSGI contributed significantly to patient management by detecting cancer in 7 of the 73 patients (9%), and was presented last week at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium.

For the first six months, IT and medical technology company Sectra reported a 15.8% increase in net sales to SEK 453.6 million (391.7). Operating profit totaled SEK 7.6 million (16.5), corresponding to an operating margin of 1.7% (4.2). Profit after net financial items was SEK 2.4 million (4.4).
