Phase III clinical trials: Linagliptin achieves significant, sustained reductions in blood sugar

Data from four pivotal Phase III clinical trials demonstrate that linagliptin achieved statistically significant and sustained reductions in blood sugar as measured by hemoglobin A1c, fasting plasma glucose and postprandial glucose. Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc. is investigating the dipeptidyl peptidase 4 inhibitor as an oral once-daily tablet, as monotherapy and combination therapy, to treat type 2 diabetes.

New preclinical data of XOMA 052 in animal model of Type 2 diabetes to be presented at ADA 2010

XOMA Ltd., a leader in the discovery and development of therapeutic antibodies, will be presenting new preclinical data in an animal model of Type 2 diabetes in which its anti-inflammatory therapeutic antibody candidate, XOMA 052, was used as monotherapy and in combination with the marketed anti-diabetic drugs exendin-4 (Byetta) or sitagliptin (Januvia).

Dapagliflozin as monotherapy demonstrates potential for type 2 diabetes treatment

Findings from a 24-week Phase 3 clinical study published online in the latest issue of Diabetes Care demonstrated that the investigational drug dapagliflozin, administered as a monotherapy, achieved statistically significant mean reductions at 5 mg and 10 mg doses once daily in the primary endpoint of glycosylated hemoglobin levels (HbA1c) in treatment-naïve adult patients with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes, compared to placebo.

Mice treated with XOMA 052 experiences improvement in measures associated with diabetes: Endocrinology

XOMA Ltd., a leader in the discovery and development of therapeutic antibodies, announced the publication of data from a mouse model of diet-induced obesity in the June, 2010 edition of the journal Endocrinology. The data showed that mice treated with XOMA 052 both prophylactically and therapeutically experienced improvement in measures associated with diabetes and cardiovascular disease including reduction in glycosylated hemoglobin levels, improvement in glucose control, improved beta-cell survival and function, and a reduction in total cholesterol without reduction in high density lipoprotein.

Vitamin D deficiency is highly prevalent in patients with Type 2 diabetes and may be associated with poor blood sugar control, according to a new study. The results will be presented Saturday at The Endocrine Society's 92nd Annual Meeting in San Diego.

Lexicon presents LX4211 Phase 2a clinical trial results for type 2 diabetes mellitus at ENDO 2010

Lexicon Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company focused on discovering breakthrough treatments for human disease, presented clinical data and analysis from its Phase 2a clinical trial of LX4211 for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus at ENDO 2010 today. The results reported today included newly-obtained data showing a trend of increased total GLP-1 in both LX4211 treatment arms relative to placebo as measured in a post-trial analysis of blood samples.

AFREZZA non-inferior to standard therapy insulin lispro in reducing HbA1c levels of Type 1 diabetics

MannKind Corporation today announced that results of a new 16-week trial show that the investigational ultra rapid acting mealtime insulin, AFREZZA™ (insulin human [rDNA origin]) Inhalation Powder, combined with basal insulin, is clearly non-inferior to standard therapy insulin lispro, a rapid acting insulin, also combined with basal insulin, in reducing HbA1c levels in subjects with inadequately controlled Type 1 diabetes.

Additional markers of risk for diabetic microvascular complications beyond Hemoglobin A1c needed

The "gold standard" diabetes test, Hemoglobin A1c (A1C), explains much less about the risk of cardiovascular complications in patients with diabetes than originally thought, according to an article in the June 9 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). The article entitled, "Beyond HbA1c: Need for Additional Markers of Risk for Diabetic Microvascular Complications," was co-authored by Irl Hirsch, M.D., of the University of Washington Medical School (Seattle, WA) and Michael Brownlee, M.D., of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

Additional benefits of LAIAs over long-acting human insulin not been proven

It has so far not been proven that the long-acting insulin analogues (LAIAs) insulin detemir (trade name: Levemir) and insulin glargine (trade name: Lantus), which are approved for the treatment of type 1 diabetes, offer patients an additional benefit versus long-acting human insulin. This applies to adults as well as to children and adolescents. This is the result of the final report published by the Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care (IQWiG) on 19 April 2010.

Researchers at LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans and Children's Hospital of New Orleans have found that there is a major difference in the hemoglobin A1c response to blood glucose between African-American and Caucasian children with diabetes. Ipsen, a global biopharmaceutical group, today announced that its partner Roche has disclosed results of the phase III T-emerge 3 study in patients with diabetes with taspoglutide, the first once weekly glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) analogue based on a human sequence. Taspoglutide originating from Ipsen's research is developed by Roche.
