Study compares effects of clin-BPO 2.5% and clin-BPO 5% on epidermal functions

Dermatologists agree that topical fixed-combination products containing clindamycin (clin) and benzoyl peroxide (BPO) are effective in the treatment of acne. However, products containing BPO concentrations at 5% or higher may limit use due to associated dryness and irritation in some patients.

Perrigo purchases KV Pharmaceutical's ANDA for clindamycin phosphate and benzoyl peroxide gel

Perrigo Company (Nasdaq: PRGO;TASE) today announced that it has purchased the ANDA for clindamycin phosphate (1%) and benzoyl peroxide (5%) gel from KV Pharmaceutical for $14 million in cash at closing and a $2 million milestone payment upon the completion of a successful technical transfer. This product is the AB-rated equivalent to Stiefel Laboratories' (a subsidiary of Glaxo SmithKline) Duac(R) gel, indicated for the topical treatment of inflammatory acne vulgaris.

Valeant develops an acne drug with a low concentration of BPO combined with clindamycin

One of the most widely prescribed drugs for acne vulgaris is benzoyl peroxide (BPO). However, at concentrations of 5-10%, BPO has the potential for skin irritation and dryness leading to poor patient compliance. Increasingly, BPO is combined with clindamycin in a fixed combination where the efficacy effects of the two ingredients are synergistic.

Mylan Pharmaceuticals markets FDA approved first generic version of Sanofi Aventis' BenzaClin

Mylan Inc. (Nasdaq: MYL) today announced that its subsidiary Mylan Pharmaceuticals Inc. has begun to market 1% Clindamycin and 5% Benzoyl Peroxide Gel based on an agreement with licensing partner Dow Pharmaceutical Sciences, a subsidiary of Valeant Pharmaceuticals International. The preparation is the first generic version of Sanofi Aventis' BenzaClin(R) to be approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The effects of antimicrobial therapy on bacterial vaginosis in non-pregnant women

Antimicrobial treatments for bacterial vaginosis (BV) are effective, but taking lactobacillus tablets alongside metronidazole antibiotic therapy increases effectiveness over taking this antibiotic alone, according to a Cochrane Systematic Review. The researchers also concluded that intravaginal lactobacillus was as effective as oral metronidazole, although they did note unexplained drop-outs from the trials.

Group B streptococcus, a major cause of serious infections, declined about 25 percent among infants younger than 7 days from 1999 to 2005, but increased nearly 50 percent among persons 15 to 64 years old, according to a study in the May 7 issue of JAMA, the Journal of the American Medical Association.
