PhotoMedex announces combination study of XTRAC Velocity laser and Clobex spray for generalized psoriasis

PhotoMedex, Inc. announced today that John Koo, MD will be the principal investigator in a clinical study assessing the efficacy of the XTRAC Velocity® excimer laser in the treatment of generalized psoriasis when used in combination with Clobex® spray. Dr. Koo is Professor and Vice Chairman in the Department of Dermatology at the University of California San Francisco Medical Center. Spearheading the study will be Dr. Koo's colleague, Tina Bhutani, MD.

FDA accepts Depomed's DM-1796 NDA for pain after shingles

Depomed, Inc. today announced that the New Drug Application (NDA) for DM-1796 was accepted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the management of postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), or pain after shingles. DM-1796 is an investigational, extended release, once-daily tablet formulation of gabapentin designed to reduce dosing frequency and have a low incidence of side effects.

Genentech reports results from Phase III study of Avastin in women with advanced ovarian cancer

Genentech, Inc., a wholly owned member of the Roche Group, today announced results from a Phase III study of Avastin (bevacizumab) that showed women with previously untreated advanced ovarian cancer who received Avastin in combination with chemotherapy, followed by the continuation of Avastin alone, had a 39 percent improvement in the likelihood of living longer without the disease worsening (progression-free survival or PFS) compared to chemotherapy alone.

Bevacizumab extends progression-free survival in women with advanced ovarian cancer

Newly reported results from a major clinical trial show that adding bevacizumab (Avastin) to standard frontline chemotherapy for women with advanced ovarian cancer and then continuing a maintenance dose of the drug afterwards significantly extends progression-free survival. Women receiving the new treatment regimen saw no worsening of their disease for 14.1 months, compared to 10.3 months for women receiving standard therapy.

Study identifies potential link between Gilbert's Syndrome, childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia

Scientists from the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute and Wayne State University School of Medicine, both in Detroit, and the Children's Hospital of Michigan/Detroit Medical Center, presented preliminary data that identified a potential link between Gilbert's Syndrome and the development of a specific subtype of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). The findings were announced today at the 2010 American Society of Clinical Oncology Annual Meeting.

Tioga commences dosing in Phase 3 trial of asimadoline for diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome

Tioga Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced today that the company has dosed its first subject in a Phase 3 clinical trial to evaluate asimadoline for the treatment of patients with diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (DIBS). The trial, referred to as ASMP3001, is the first of two Phase 3 trials being conducted under a Special Protocol Assessment (SPA) agreement with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for U.S. registration. A new study has provided further evidence of a link between indoor tanning and melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. Scientists at the University of Minnesota's School of Public Health and Masonic Cancer Centre claim that their study, which is published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention, "definitively links" the use of sunbeds to melanoma.
