EMA accepts Pfizer's filing of axitinib for regulatory review to treat advanced renal cell carcinoma

Pfizer Inc. announced today that the European Medicines Agency has accepted Pfizer's filing for regulatory review of axitinib for patients with advanced renal cell carcinoma after failure of prior systemic treatment.

Almac's main research projects on ovarian, breast cancer to be presented at ASCO 2011

Two of Almac's main research projects have been selected for presentation at the 2011 ASCO meeting. Both of these studies are based on Almac's approach of profiling large clinical datasets and analysing the data for molecular subgroups that can aid in improved diagnosis of cancer by identifying molecular subtypes and by identifying molecular subgroups which are of clinical and therapeutic relevance.

FDA approves SUTENT for treatment of pancreatic NET

Pfizer Inc. announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved SUTENT® (sunitinib malate) as the first anti-VEGF therapy to treat progressive, well-differentiated pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (NET) in patients with unresectable locally advanced or metastatic disease. Pancreatic NET is a rare cancer reported in two to four people per million annually worldwide.

Bayer, Onyx to present Nexavar-chemotherapy combination Phase 2b trial data in breast cancer at ASCO 2011

Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and Onyx Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced results from a Phase 2b trial evaluating Nexavar® (sorafenib) tablets in patients with locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer previously treated with a bevacizumab-containing regimen, which showed that Nexavar was associated with statistically significant improvements in progression-free survival and time-to-progression.

Animal studies reveal new route to treating heart disease

Scientists at Johns Hopkins have shown in laboratory experiments in mice that blocking the action of a signaling protein deep inside the heart’s muscle cells blunts the most serious ill effects of high blood pressure on the heart. These include heart muscle enlargement, scar tissue formation and loss of blood vessel growth.

Researchers discover strategy that promotes new blood vessel formation

Researchers at The University of Western Ontario have discovered a strategy for stimulating the formation of highly functional new blood vessels in tissues that are starved of oxygen. Dr. Geoffrey Pickering and Matthew Frontini at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry developed a strategy in which a biological factor, called fibroblast growth factor 9, is delivered at the same time that the body is making its own effort at forming new blood vessels in vulnerable or damaged tissue.
