oBand uses the da Vinci Surgical System to perform the world's first robotic surgery in an outpatient surgical center

oBand Surgery Centers, the nation's leading bariatric network of outpatient surgical facilities owned and operated by nationally recognized Lap Band surgeons, has set a new 'first' in the use of robotics for outpatient surgery. oBand Director of Robotic Surgery S. Adam Ramin, M.D., an assistant professor at City of Hope National Medical Center, today announced they have performed the world's first, outpatient robotic surgery using the famed da Vinci® Surgical System. Dr. Ramin performed the innovative surgery in July in Los Angeles using Robotics to remove a patient's pelvic cyst.

It is still unknown why the natural history of chronic disease caused by hepatitis C virus (HCV), which currently infects 3% of the world's population, varies from mild in some patients to rapidly progressing in others. Age, sex, alcohol consumption and liver sensitivity to gut-derived bacterial endotoxins, were the early factors defined to enhance the risk of fibrosis progression.

Hiberix receives accelerated approval from FDA to overcome nationwide shortage

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today approved Hiberix, a Haemophilus influenzae Type b (Hib) vaccine, as a booster dose for children 15 months through 4 years old. Hiberix is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, with U.S. headquarters in Research Triangle Park, N.C. and Philadelphia.

FDA issues marketing approval for APP Pharmaceuticals' Penicillin G potassium for Injection, USP

APP Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Fresenius Kabi Pharmaceuticals Holding, Inc. (NASDAQ: APCVZ), announced today that it has received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to market penicillin G potassium for Injection, USP, in two dosage strengths. Penicillin G is therapeutically equivalent to the reference drug PfizerPen™ G, which is marketed by the innovator Pfizer, Inc.

Voices of Meningitis urges parents to vaccinate preteens and teens for protection against meningococcal diseases

School nurses and families affected by a potentially deadly form of meningitis today launched a national consumer education initiative, called Voices of Meningitis. The initiative strongly urges parents to vaccinate preteens and teens, who are at greater risk of getting meningococcal disease, including meningococcal meningitis -- a rare, but serious bacterial infection.

Blankenships receive $6 million compensation for infant son's death due to medical negligence

A couple who alleged that Saint Louis University failed to diagnose and treat a bacterial infection that led to their 6-month-old son’s death were awarded $6 million by a St. Louis jury on Aug. 17. The parents were represented by attorneys David M. Zevan and Kevin J. Davidson of St. Louis-based Zevan & Davidson.

In response to a U.S. shortage of a vaccine to protect infants from Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib), GlaxoSmithKline (NYSE: GSK) has received accelerated approval from the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) for Hiberix((R)) [Haemophilus b Conjugate Vaccine (Tetanus Toxoid Conjugate)] as a booster dose in children 15 months through four years of age. Hib is an often severe and potentially deadly bacterial infection that can cause meningitis.

New understanding on meningitis cause

A specific protein on the surface of a common bacterial pathogen allows the bacteria to leave the bloodstream and enter the brain, initiating the deadly infection known as meningitis. The new finding, which may guide development of improved vaccines to protect those most vulnerable, including young infants and the elderly, is now available online in the Journal of Experimental Medicine.
