Stem cells have the remarkable potential to develop into many different cell types in the body during early life and growth. In addition, in many tissues they serve as a sort of internal repair system, dividing essentially without limit to replenish other cells as long as the person or animal is still alive. When a stem cell divides, each new cell has the potential either to remain a stem cell or become another type of cell with a more specialized function, such as a muscle cell, a red blood cell, or a brain cell.

Cellular Dynamics International, Inc. (CDI), the world's largest producer of cellular tools for drug discovery and safety derived from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), and iPS Academia Japan, Inc., today announced a nonexclusive licensing agreement for the seminal iPSC patent portfolio arising out of the work of Dr. Shinya Yamanaka, M.D., Ph.D., Center for iPS Cell Research and Application (CiRA), Kyoto University.

Genzyme Corp. today announced that its Board of Directors has voted to pursue several actions to increase shareholder value. The company will initiate a $2 billion stock buyback, under which $1 billion of stock will be repurchased in the near term and financed with debt. New research from Rice University and the University of Cambridge suggests that a closely connected trio of regulatory proteins fulfills that role in hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), the self-renewing cells the body uses to make new blood cells.
