Researcher to lead $14.5M project to fight malaria in Southeast Asia

A researcher in Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences will lead a seven-year, $14.5 million project to fight malaria in Southeast Asia. Liwang Cui, professor of entomology, is the principal investigator for the Southeast Asia Malaria Research Center, one of 10 International Centers of Excellence for Malaria Research announced by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, part of the National Institutes of Health.

Emergent awarded $107M HHS BARDA contract to develop large-scale manufacturing of BioThrax

Emergent BioSolutions Inc. announced today that it has signed a contract valued at up to $107 million with the Office of the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), to develop and obtain regulatory approval for large-scale manufacturing of BioThrax® (Anthrax Vaccine Adsorbed) in Building 55. Building 55 is the company's large-scale state-of-the-art vaccine manufacturing facility in Lansing, Michigan.

Administration to unveil first national HIV/AIDS strategy today

The White House will unveil the first formal national HIV/AIDS strategy on Tuesday, a plan that aims to reduce the number of new cases by 25 percent in the next five years, officials said. Noting that the number of new infections in the United States has been static -- and that the number of people living with HIV is growing -- the new policy would direct more resources toward African Americans and gay and bisexual men. Latinos and substance abusers should also be a priority, the report says.

Stem cell transplantation from healthy donor helps cure aggressive form of CLL

The transplantation of stem cells from a healthy donor (allogeneic) offers the chance of cure for patients with an aggressive form of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), irrespective of genetic prognostic factors and the prior course of the disease. The German CLL Study Group proved this in a multicentric clinical phase II study led by Professor Dr. Peter Dreger, senior consultant and head of the division of stem cell transplantation at the Department of Internal Medicine V at Heidelberg University Hospital.

AnaptysBio awarded DARPA contract to generate novel high affinity thermally stable antibodies

Human Genome Sciences, Inc. and Lonza today announced an agreement for the future commercial supply of BENLYSTA® (belimumab), which is currently under regulatory review in the United States and Europe as a potential new treatment for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). BENLYSTA is being developed by HGS and GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) under a co-development and commercialization agreement entered into in 2006.

Hemispherx Biopharma, Inc., announced that it has received a report, prepared by Hideki Hasegawa, M.D. Ph.D., Director, Laboratory of Infectious Disease Pathology, National Institute of Infectious Disease, that summarizes the results of a three year Japanese government funded program to develop and test a nasally delivered H5N1 (Avian Flu) vaccine which, when coupled with Ampligen®, an experimental therapeutic, provided a robust and long lasting immune response to the vaccine.

Biogen Idec, Swedish Orphan Biovitrum announce advancement of rFVIIIFc into registrational study

Biogen Idec and Swedish Orphan Biovitrum today announced that they plan to advance the companies' long-lasting, fully-recombinant factor VIII Fc fusion protein (rFVIIIFc) into a registrational clinical trial in people with hemophilia A. The decision to advance the program is based on promising data from a Phase 1/2a open-label, cross-over, multi-center, dose-escalation study that evaluated the safety and pharmacokinetics of an intravenous injection of rFVIIIFc in 16 previously-treated patients with severe hemophilia A.

Discovery of antibodies that kill more than 90% of HIV viruses gives new hope for vaccine

"An effective vaccine against the AIDS virus may have moved one step closer to reality, researchers said Thursday," the Los Angeles Times reports. "Federal researchers have identified a pair of naturally occurring antibodies that are able to kill more than 90% of all strains of the AIDS virus, a finding they say could lead to the development of new treatments for HIV infections and to the production of the first successful vaccine against the virus" (Maugh, 7/9).

HHS to give states $25 million for HIV drugs; Researchers identify antibodies that may help in AIDS vaccine research

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said Thursday "that she would provide $25 million more to help states buy life-saving medications for people with H.I.V. or AIDS. Advocates for patients said the money was not nearly enough to eliminate waiting lists, which have surged to record levels as people have lost health insurance, along with their jobs, and states have cut their budgets. Ms. Sebelius said she was 'reallocating and transferring $25 million in existing resources' to provide medicines for people on waiting lists.

Pfizer to present results of hemophilia studies at WFH 2010 Congress

Pfizer Inc, the world's leading biopharmaceutical company, today announced that the results of a number of hemophilia studies will be presented at the World Federation of Hemophilia 2010 Congress taking place July 10-14, 2010, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Key research includes a pre-clinical evaluation of recombinant factor Xa as a potential new approach to restoring hemostasis, as well as a study assessing the potential for an engineered recombinant factor VIIa molecule to improve therapeutic outcomes in mouse models of hemophilia.

Phase II trial results of TB-402 presented at International Congress on Thrombosis

BioInvent International AB and ThromboGenics NV announce that the positive results from a Phase II trial of TB-402 (Anti-Factor VIII antibody) were presented at the 21st International Congress on Thrombosis in Milan, Italy yesterday. Researcher uses biopharmaceutical proteases to develop novel therapy for Alzheimer's disease

A University of Oklahoma researcher is developing a novel therapy for Alzheimer's disease using "biopharmaceutical proteases" to attack the toxic plaque that builds up in the brain of an Alzheimer's patient-an approach that he predicts will be lower in cost and higher in effectiveness than current therapies.
