An antibody is a blood protein that is produced in response to and counteracts an antigen. Antibodies are produced in response to disease and help the body fight against the particular disease. In this way, antibodies help the body develop an immunity to disease.

Compugen's CGEN-15001 recombinant fusion protein abolishes spontaneous relapses in animal model of MS

Compugen Ltd. announced today that administration of CGEN-15001 in an animal model of multiple sclerosis (MS) has been shown to completely abolish spontaneous relapses. In addition, administration of this novel molecule prior to disease onset demonstrated a pronounced delay of disease onset and a significant decrease in disease symptoms.

Genentech's second Phase III ICON7 study of Avastin in ovarian cancer meets primary endpoint

Genentech, a member of the Roche Group, announced today that a second large, Phase III, international study showed that the combination of Avastin® (bevacizumab) and chemotherapy, followed by the continued use of Avastin alone, increased the time women with previously untreated ovarian cancer lived without the disease worsening (progression-free survival or PFS, the primary endpoint), compared to chemotherapy alone.

Allogeneic stem cell transplant holds promise for treatment-resistant chronic lymphocytic leukemia

Allogeneic (donor-derived) stem cell transplant (alloSCT) may be a promising option for patients with treatment-resistant chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), regardless of the patient's underlying genetic abnormalities, according to the results of a study published online today in Blood, the journal of the American Society of Hematology.

Two laboratory methods for Drosophila Neurobiology featured in Cold Spring Harbor Protocols journal

Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory's Neurobiology of Drosophila course (http://meetings.cshl.edu/courses/c-dros10.shtml) has served as the training ground for a generation of scientists tackling these complex problems. A new laboratory manual based on the protocols and background information taught in the course promises to spread these techniques to a wider audience. Two of the methods from the manual are featured in the July issue of the journal Cold Spring Harbor Protocols.

GSK, Genmab amend ofatumumab agreement

GlaxoSmithKline and Genmab A/S announced today an amendment to the ofatumumab co-development and commercialisation agreement. Under the terms of the amendment, GSK will take responsibility for developing ofatumumab in autoimmune indications whilst continuing to jointly develop ofatumumab with Genmab in oncology indications.

Survey: 66% of patients with metastatic colorectal cancer are now tested for KRAS

This represents a 50% increase in levels of KRAS testing in just one year.

Researchers at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences Center for Prostate Disease Research, in collaboration with investigators at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology and Walter Reed Army Medical Center, have developed a highly specific assay for the detection of ERG, a protein associated with tumor formations which is present in more than half of all prostate cancers.

PIKAMAB, a biopharmaceutical company specializing in stratified medicine, announced today that it has secured exclusive rights to an issued U.S. patent (US 6,986,987) from the UAB Research Foundation. This patent pertains to the discovery that the functional polymorphism (Ser/Gly248) in the cytoplasmic domain of Fc alpha receptor determines the proinflammatory potential of serum IgA autoantibodies through cell signaling and production of cytokines such as TNF-alpha, IL-6, and IL-1β in an allele-dependent manner.

Eisai to commercialize lorcaserin for obesity and weight management in U.S.

Arena Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced that Eisai Inc. will market lorcaserin for obesity and weight management in the United States following U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval under the terms of a marketing and supply agreement between Arena Pharmaceuticals GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of Arena Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and Eisai. Lorcaserin, which Arena discovered and has developed for weight management, is intended for obese patients as well as overweight patients who have at least one weight-related co-morbid condition.

Eisai signs agreement with Arena Pharmaceuticals GmbH to commercialize lorcaserin

Eisai Inc., the U.S. pharmaceutical operation of Tokyo-based Eisai Co., Ltd., announced today that it has entered into an agreement with Arena Pharmaceuticals GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of Arena Pharmaceuticals, Inc., for exclusive U.S. rights to commercialize lorcaserin, a drug candidate for potential use in the treatment of obesity, including weight loss, for patients who are obese (Body Mass Index or BMI ≥ 30) or overweight (BMI ≥ 27) with at least one weight-related co-morbid condition.

XOMA reaches enrollment goal of 325 patients for Phase 2b clinical trial of XOMA 052

XOMA Ltd., a leader in the discovery and development of therapeutic antibodies, announced that it has reached the enrollment goal of 325 patients for its Phase 2b dose-ranging clinical trial of XOMA 052, and that it expects patient enrollment to close in July 2010, with top-line results available in the first quarter of 2011. XOMA 052 is a therapeutic antibody candidate that inhibits the pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta) which drives the inflammatory cause of Type 2 diabetes.

USPTO issues Notice of Allowance for patent application related to Neogenix Oncology's 16C3 antibody

Neogenix Oncology announced today that the U.S. Patent and Trade Mark Office has issued a Notice of Allowance for a patent application related to its 16C3 antibody. Discovered and developed by Neogenix Oncology, this antibody appears to have anti-tumor activity for both pancreatic and colorectal tumors, and may have both therapeutic and diagnostic utility. The antibody may have activity in other tumors as well, which the company will explore at such time as it prepares a pre-IND package for FDA review and designs a clinical trial for the 16C3 antibody.
