Transcept Pharmaceuticals to discuss the Complete Response Letter for Intermezzo NDA

Transcept Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced that it is scheduled to meet with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on January 20, 2010 to discuss the Complete Response Letter regarding the New Drug Application (NDA) for Intermezzo® (zolpidem tartrate sublingual tablet). As previously announced, the Complete Response Letter, received by Transcept on October 28, 2009, indicated that the FDA could not approve the NDA in its present form.

Multidisciplinary program to understand the phenomenon of mind within the context of neuroscience

As we seek a better understanding of the workings of the human mind, we are continually confronted by fresh ethical, legal, and social questions. Now, researchers are increasingly emphasizing the role of a new discipline, neuroethics, to guide the search for answers to those questions. This will become even more important as we embark upon an envisioned “Decade of the Mind” in 2010, a multidisciplinary effort dedicated to understanding the phenomenon of mind within the context of neuroscience.

Seattle Genetics and Agensys expand ADC collaboration

Seattle Genetics, Inc. (Nasdaq: SGEN) and Agensys, Inc., an affiliate of Astellas, announced today an expansion of the companies’ antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) collaboration. Under the amended agreement, Agensys will pay a $12 million fee for exclusive rights to ADC licenses against additional antigen targets. Seattle Genetics also receives an option to co-develop another ADC at the time of investigational new drug (IND) submission.

Study: Men who do moderate-to-heavy intensity exercise are less likely to have stroke

Men who regularly take part in moderate-to-heavy intensity exercise such as jogging, tennis or swimming may be less likely to have a stroke than people who get no exercise or only light exercise, such as walking, golfing, or bowling, according to a study published in the November 24, 2009, print issue of Neurology ®, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

Complicated flow of cellular messages can lead to self-destruction of brain cells, says new study

Scientists at the Brain Research Centre, a partnership of the University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine and Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute, have uncovered new information about the mechanism by which brain cells die following a stroke, as well as a possible way to mitigate that damage. The results of the study were recently published online in Nature Medicine.

Scientists discover new potential target for treating non-Hodgkin's lymphoma

Physician-scientists from Weill Cornell Medical College have discovered a molecular mechanism that may prove to be a powerful target for the treatment of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, a type of cancer that affects lymphocytes, or white blood cells. By exploiting this mechanism, researchers have been able to powerfully suppress tumor formation in lab testing and in animal models.
