Americans to get needed help to quit smoking through federal health care law: New report

Millions of Americans will get needed help to quit smoking thanks to the newly enacted U.S. health care law, and it is up to states to close a gap that still remains for other smokers, a new American Lung Association report finds.

Valley Anesthesiology Consultants' mobile services division receives AAAHC accreditation

VAC Mobile Services, a division of Valley Anesthesiology Consultants, has achieved accreditation by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC). Valley is one of only 10 office-based anesthesia groups nationwide to receive AAAHC accreditation, and the only office-based anesthesia organization in Arizona currently accredited by AAAHC.

U.S. models of primary care improves quality of life in older patients with multiple chronic conditions

In a review of comprehensive primary care programs for older adults with multiple chronic conditions, authors identified three models that appear to have the greatest potential for improving quality of care and life for these patients, while reducing or not increasing the costs of their health care, according to an article in the November 3 issue of JAMA, a theme issue on aging.

Tenet third quarter adjusted EBITDA decreases 15.4% to $203 million

Tenet Healthcare Corporation today reported adjusted EBITDA of $203 million for the quarter ended September 30, 2010, a decrease of $37 million, or 15.4 percent, compared to $240 million for the third quarter of 2009. Net income attributable to common shareholders for the third quarter of 2010 was $932 million, or $1.68 per diluted share, compared to a net loss of $3 million, or $0.01 per diluted share, for the third quarter of 2009.

Open enrollment brings higher premiums for 2011

As open enrollment for many employer-sponsored health plans approaches, workers are faced with higher premiums in 2011, yet again, MSNBC reports. "The increase is typical of what workers have seen in [the] last three years — around 10 percent. But what's different this year is some employers aren't just blaming the usual suspects for rising premiums — unhealthy workers, over-paid doctors and hospitals, and a bad economy. Now insurance experts and employers are also blaming health care reform.

Today, MED3OOO announced that it has acquired Insurance Solutions Group, Inc., an insurance consulting and brokerage firm based in Wexford, PA. Carl Smollinger, President, and Tom Dean, Vice President of Insurance Solutions Group, will join MED3OOO. A new analysis published by THE SAGE GROUP, concludes that peripheral artery disease (PAD) afflicts 2.0-3.7 million U.S. citizens with diabetic foot ulcers (DFU). Approximately 1 million diabetic foot ulcer patients suffer from the most severe and deadly form of PAD, critical limb ischemia.

The Air Force's top uniformed officer on Tuesday warned that growing healthcare costs could hurt other critical military needs. Schwartz said that the Pentagon pays $40 billion in healthcare costs for military members and retirees, and is expected to pay as much as $60 billion by 2015 about 13 percent of the entire Pentagon budget.
