Linkam tensile stage chosen to control stress in growth of human collagen by the University of Liverpool

Manufacturers temperature controlled microscopy, Linkam Scientific Instruments, have been chosen by the Physics Department of the University of Liverpool to study the effects of controlling stresses applied during the growth of collagen secreted from human fibroblast cells. The research goal of Senior Research Assistant, Dr Caroline Smith, and her colleagues at the University of Liverpool is to advance the treatment of tendon injuries by developing a method of growing oriented human collagen.

Fluidigm ships over 1 billion microscopic NanoFlex valves

Fluidigm today announced that its Singapore factory has manufactured and shipped more than 1 billion microscopic NanoFlex™ valves. Each NanoFlex valve is so small that it takes 10 to span the width of a human hair.

Bruker closes acquisition of Michrom

Bruker today announced the closing of its acquisition of Michrom Bioresources, Inc. (Michrom), a 20 year old, privately owned company located in Auburn, California, after receiving unanimous Michrom shareholder approval. The acquisition is not expected to have a material effect on Bruker's 2011 financials.

Microwave vital signal sensing measures heart rate variability

Current medical techniques for monitoring the heart rate and other vital signs use electrodes attached to the body, which are impractical for patients who want to move around. Plasma physicist Atsushi Mase, a scientist at Kyushu University in Japan, and colleague Daisuke Nagae have developed a new technique to disconnect people from their electrodes by using microwaves.

Multispectral imaging of ocular fundus using new LED Illumination system

A new imaging system using six different wavelengths to illuminate the interior of the eyeball (ocular fundus) may pave the way for doctors to easily screen patients for common diseases of the eye, such as age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. The system is described in the journal Review of Scientific Instruments, which is published by the American Institute of Physics.

Bruker to acquire Veeco’s worldwide SPM and OIM instruments business for $229 million

Bruker Corporation today announces the signing of an agreement to acquire the Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM) and Optical Industrial Metrology (OIM) instruments business from Veeco Instruments, Inc. for $229 million in cash. The transaction has been approved by the Boards of Directors of both companies and is expected to close during the fourth quarter of 2010, pending regulatory review and subject to customary closing conditions.

Given Imaging to purchase Sierra Scientific Instruments from Water Street Healthcare Partners for $35M

Water Street Healthcare Partners, a leading private equity firm focused exclusively on health care, announced today that it has entered into a definitive agreement to sell its gastrodiagnostic device company, Sierra Scientific Instruments, to Given Imaging Ltd ( GIVN). Given Imaging, the global leader in patient-friendly GI diagnostic and monitoring solutions, will purchase the business for $35 million in cash. The transaction is expected to close in early April.
