Positive results from nimotuzumab Phase II study for gastric cancer

YM BioSciences, a life sciences product development company advancing a diverse portfolio of promising hematology and cancer-related products at various stages of development, today announced that results were reported from a randomized Phase II gastric cancer study of nimotuzumab being conducted by its licensees, Daiichi Sankyo Co., Ltd. in Japan and Kuhnil Pharma Co. Ltd., in Korea.

RG7204 Phase III study shows significant survival benefit in patients with metastatic melanoma

Genentech, a member of the Roche Group, today announced that BRIM3, a Phase III clinical study of RG7204, met its co-primary endpoints showing a significant survival benefit in people with previously untreated BRAF V600 mutation-positive metastatic melanoma.

Antibiotics for ear infection in kids better than watchful waiting: Study

Findings from two latest clinical trials reveal that a young child with ear infections recovers faster and more completely if doctors give antibiotics right away rather than waiting to see if the kid get better on his/her own. One of the studies was in the U.S. and one in Finland. Earlier it has been debated that for young children with middle ear infections or otitis media whether immediate antibiotic treatment was better than watchful waiting. Current treatment recommendations in the U.S., Canada, and Europe allow for a watch-and-wait approach to suspected middle ear infections in young children. Change is coming, predicts study leader Alejandro Hoberman, MD, of Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.

Less than 7% of U.S. seniors get shingles vaccination

Although a vaccine to prevent shingles has been available since 2006, less than 7 percent of U.S. seniors — the demographic most frequently affected by the disease — chose to receive the vaccination as of 2008, finds a new study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Bacteria from cat fleas: 1st Australian case

Australia’s fist case of a human infected with bacteria from cat fleas has been reported by a Newcastle doctor who says the disease may be more common than the GPs thought. The case study appeared in the Medical Journal of Australia that documents a Victorian family infected with Rickettsia felis after exposure to a kitten infested with fleas. Murdoch University scientists confirmed the presence of R. felis in cat fleas on cats and dogs in WA for the first time in 2006.

Placebos work

According to a new study people who knowingly take a dummy pill or placebo may benefit from it. These pills are usually made from sugar or other inert non-harmful materials. Usually when used in clinical trials patients are unaware whether they are taking the tested drug or a placebo to ensure the medical benefits of a potential new drug are assessed rigorously. However this new study published in the science journal PLoS ONE, found placebos may work even when patients are aware that they are taking them.

Boehringer Ingelheim reports positive results from afatinib phase IIb/III LUX-Lung 1 trial in advanced NSCLC

Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced that new data from a subgroup analysis of the phase IIb/III LUX-Lung 1 trial show that afatinib (BIBW 2992) reached a four-fold extension (4.4 months vs. 1.0 month for placebo) in progression-free survival (PFS) in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients most likely to have an epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutation. The updated LUX-Lung 1 data will be presented at the Chicago Multidisciplinary Symposium in Thoracic Oncology.

Positive interim results from elotuzumab Phase 1b/2 study in relapsed multiple myeloma

Abbott and Bristol-Myers Squibb Company today announced interim results from the Phase 2 portion of a Phase 1b/2 open-label study which showed a high objective response rate (ORR) among patients with relapsed multiple myeloma who received elotuzumab plus lenalidomide and low-dose dexamethasone.
