Positive results from Merck's Phase IIB clinical study of odanacatib for treating osteoporosis

New data from a Phase IIB clinical study of odanacatib, Merck & Co., Inc.'s oral, once-weekly investigational treatment for osteoporosis, showed that when stopping treatment after two years, the increases in lower back (lumbar spine) bone mineral density (BMD) were reversed over the next year, while BMD at the hip (femoral neck) remained above levels observed at the start of the study.

Enobia Pharma's clinical study of ENB-0040 for treating hypophosphatasia provides positive results

Enobia Pharma today announced positive data from a clinical study of ENB-0040, a bone targeted enzyme replacement therapy, under investigation for the treatment of hypophosphatasia (HPP). After six months of treatment with ENB-0040, four of five severely affected patients showed marked improvements in bone mineralization, correction of skeletal defects, better respiratory function, including weaning from assisted ventilation, and cognitive and motor development.

ARIAD to complete its Phase 3 SUCCEED trial following DMS recommendation

ARIAD Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Preclinical study results on using uncultured ADRCs to treat periodontitis reported

Cytori Therapeutics reported results from their preclinical study on the use of uncultured adipose-derived regenerative cells (ADRCs) in the treatment of critical periodontal defects in a rat model. The results suggest that the use of ADRCs may reverse the effects of periodontal disease, evidenced by significantly improved alveolar bone healing and decreased gingival (gum) invasion of the defect. The data were reported today at the 95th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Periodontology in Boston.

First FOSAMAX case declared as mistrial by the U.S.District Court Judge

Merck & Co., Inc. said today that a mistrial was declared by U.S. District Court Judge John F. Keenan in Boles v. Merck, the first FOSAMAX case to go to trial. This case was the Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee's first choice to take to trial. The Boles case was tried in New York federal court and involved a Florida woman who blamed her dental and jaw problems on FOSAMAX.
