Reliv International's chief scientific officer suggests tips to improvise lifestyle as age increases

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the United States is on the "brink of a longevity revolution." In fact, by 2030, one in every five Americans will be over the age of 65. So, what can adults do now to ensure that they continue to enjoy a great lifestyle in their later years? In honor of Healthy Aging Month this September, Dr. Carl Hastings, chief scientific officer of Reliv International, offers some advice.

InterMune receives $20 million event payment from Roche for initiating the Phase 2b trial of RG7227/ ITMN-191

Roche (SIX: ROG.VX; RO.S, OTCQX: RHHBY) and InterMune, Inc. (Nasdaq: ITMN) today announced that the first patient has been dosed in a Phase 2b study evaluating the hepatitis C virus (HCV) protease inhibitor, RG7227/ ITMN-191, in combination with PEGASYS(R) (pegylated interferon alfa-2a) and COPEGUS(R) (ribavirin). The study, to be conducted at 45 sites globally, will further define the safety and efficacy profile of RG7227/ ITMN-191, for a treatment duration of up to 24 weeks. Approximately 300 treatment-naive patients chronically infected with HCV genotype 1 - the most difficult to treat form of the virus - will participate.

Eli Lilly and Company announced today that initial results from its pivotal, five-year, Phase III GJAD "GENERATIONS" trial for arzoxifene met its primary endpoints of significantly reducing the risk of vertebral fracture and invasive breast cancer in postmenopausal women.

Biologist demystifies Acinetobacter baumannii

Tao Weitao, a researcher in the College of Sciences' Department of Biology at the University of Texas at San Antonio is making great strides in a project that was funded one year ago by the San Antonio Area Foundation. The professor in the South Texas Center for Emerging Infectious Diseases is researching Acinetobacter baumannii, a soil-dwelling bacterium that threatens the health of military personnel in the Middle East and can also infect their family members once the soldiers have returned home following battle.

Pediatric researchers have resolved an apparent contradiction in the field of prenatal cell transplantation - a medical approach that holds future promise in correcting sickle cell disease and other serious congenital blood disorders. In a new study in animals, the researchers showed that the mother's immune response interferes with the offspring's earlier ability to tolerate transplanted donor cells.

Massage offers both physical and psychological benefits and is used at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in many areas including Rehabilitation, Physical Medicine and in patients who have received organ transplants, just to name a few. Researchers at Nationwide Children’s recently published a study in the Journal of Pediatric Psychology that revealed the benefits of massage in reducing pain, anxiety and depression in children with Sickle Cell Disease.

Endocyte announces results from study of EC145 in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer

Results were presented at the 13th World Conference on Lung Cancer in San Francisco. The single arm Phase II study evaluated the therapeutic agent EC145 and the molecular imaging agent EC20 in 42 patients with advanced adenocarcinoma of the lung. Forty percent of patients involved in the clinical trial had already failed at least four chemotherapy regimens prior to enrollment in the study.

Revenue for both periods primarily consisted of Fortical sales and royalties, which were $3,807,000 for the three months ended June 30, 2009, and $4,110,000 for the three months ended June 30, 2008.
