USC alumni gift $30 million to South Carolina College of Pharmacy

Two University of South Carolina alumni with a desire to transform pharmacy education and practice are making a $30 million gift to the university's South Carolina College of Pharmacy, the second-largest in the university's history.

Serving communities throughout Chicago, Jane Addams Hull House Association is one of the oldest and largest social service agencies in the area serving over 60,000 individuals and families in 42 locations. As an organization serving people and communities impacted by poverty, domestic violence, homelessness, joblessness and other challenges, their clients are also impacted by the health crisis of obesity.

HHS Secretary Sebelius announces $130.8 million in grants to expand health professions workforce

HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius today announced $130.8 million in grants to strengthen and expand the health professions workforce. Six areas are targeted: primary care workforce training, oral health workforce training, equipment to enhance training across the health professions, loan repayments for health professionals, health careers opportunity programs for disadvantaged students, and patient navigator outreach and chronic disease prevention in health disparity populations.

Investigators uncover new insights on adolescent fighting

UT Southwestern Medical Center investigators have uncovered new insights on adolescent fighting: what triggers it, and how to stem it. Varied real-life factors pile on daily to put teens on edge: destructive behaviors like drug abuse, drinking or high-risk sexual encounters; poverty; academic troubles; and even depression. Data analyzed by researchers at UT Southwestern suggests that when teens perceive support from their families and/or schools, it can help mitigate violence.

Center for One Health Illinois to receive additional $500,000 grant from USDA

The Center for One Health Illinois, established at the University of Illinois last year with a $250,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, will receive another $500,000 in grants over several years from the USDA to pursue its mission of fostering collaborations and the free flow of information among those in the fields of medicine, public health, the environment and agriculture.

Biotechnology industry leaders announced today a major new program to improve the quality of U.S. life science education. The Biotechnology Institute's new "Scientists in the Classroom" initiative is the life science industry's response to President Obama's "Educate to Innovate" campaign to improve the performance of America's students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education.

Friendship paradox helps analyze social network, monitor member health to predict flu outbreak

Nicholas Christakis, professor of medicine, medical sociology and sociology at Harvard University, and James Fowler, professor of medical genetics and political science at the University of California, San Diego, used the paradox to study the 2009 flu epidemic among 744 students. The findings, the researchers say, point to a novel method for early detection of contagious outbreaks.

Professor advocates steps to help health care industry increase patient understanding of health information

Studies show that nearly half of all Americans have difficulty understanding health information. Confusing medical directions, such as dosage and timing of prescription medicine, can lead to serious consequences including health setbacks, inappropriate hospital admissions and, sometimes, death. Now, researchers at the University of Missouri School of Health Professions are examining what health care facilities can do to increase patient understanding and positive outcomes.

Calm men preferred by women: Study

According to a new study, women prefer calm men to stressed ones. Researchers at the University of Abertay Dundee in Scotland found that women were more attracted to calm, collected men with lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol coursing through their systems, than men who are chronically stressed. The study was published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B journal. The researchers also found that there was no clear association between attractiveness and high levels of testosterone as was thought before.

There is a significant disparity between knowledge and attitudes on the dangers of skin cancer among male and female medical students in Florida according to a new study by a joint team of researchers from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev and the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
